How Should I Clean My Nebulizer and Acapella Device

Posted by picartist @picartist, Jul 4 7:03pm

I have only been diagnosed a few months and have been cleaning my nebulizer and Acapella after each use by soaking in soapy water, rinsing with tap water and rinsing again with purified water. Once a week I soak them all in hydrogen peroxide and rinse again. I then let them air dry. So far I have not had an infection but wondering if I am doing it wrong.

I really don't know about these type cups. I used them a year and would be nervous about putting them in boiling water. One method from AI was to wash them in a clear dishwashing liquid without any chemicals, rinse with distilled water and let it dry. Also once a week soak in Hydrogen Peroxide, rinse with distilled water and let dry. Right now I wash my Piro in a bowl with clear dish soap, rinse, then put in a baby bottle sterilizer (Phillips). Seems to work well. Piro B Prone is a nebulizer and cups, much better than the one I used like yours. I got mine from Direct Home Medical, $89 for two cup kit.

Piro Prone B is a nebulizer brand name. I bought mine from Direct Home Medical but others may sell this model also.

As far as I can tell, all of the nebulizers (that is the cup and mouthpiece) that are meant for reuse over a period of time can be sterilized - either in boiling water or a baby bottle sterilizer. Even without MAC "on the menu" we have always (40 years) sanitized ours. Those labeled for "individual use only" "single use" or disposable will melt.

I buy generic reusable ones from a nebulizer supply company. Just ONCE I tried to get them cheaper by buying from a non-medical supply. They were labeled "reusable" and melted. Lesson learned.

We use a large generic Sanitizer that we bought on Amazon and wish we can leave several nebulizers and aerobic at once together. It has either a fast mode or a longer mode, but I believe it says 99% germ three is that as good as a baby sterilizer?

Sometimes you need to go to the primary source to get such questions answered. Dr. Falkinham addresses UV sterilization in this paper. Bottom line, 5x UV will kill NTM but not their biofilms and NTM "killed" by UV can re-activate once exposed to light.
