How long for a complete itinerary?

Posted by summermaples @summermaples, May 20, 2025

My son was accepted to Mayo Clinic, and our initial appointment was booked about 6 days ago. We travel in July. Currently there is only one day of appointments in the portal. How long does it typically take for the full itinerary to be completed? Right now if only shows an appointment with an internal medicine doctor, bloodwork, psychiatrist, and overnight pulse oximeter test. My understanding from his doctor at home is he should have several days with different specialists, especially considering all the different things he has going on. But I’m getting a little concerned this is all they have planned for him. If it is, it’s not really worth the travel 🫤

FYI, if phone appointment is prior to any actual in person appointments, it may be to go over all your medications and allergies, etc... They do that ahead of time so it is complete prior to first appointment. It would be a good idea to have your list of medications or actual medication bottles available for that call.

Yes we have that scheduled about a week ahead, thank you!

I had roughly 7 appointments scheduled before leaving for Mayo in Rochester. Once I met with the doctor on the first day, she added a lot more appointments. You will be assigned a care coordination team at your first appointment. They ask your departure date and work to get what they can scheduled in that timeframe. I think I ended up with 20 appointments after everything was said and done. I stayed from 4/9 to 4/18. I stayed at an inexpensive hotel that provided free uber service to and from Mayo for appointments.

I think that the appointments scheduled ahead of time depends on your reason for going to Mayo in the first place. I was traveling there for heart surgery and my schedule with two days of preliminary appointments was in hand a couple of weeks before our arrival. The protocol of appointments for tests and interviews is well established for a septal myectomy. We are all different and your particular issue/test/appointment needs may need fine tuning as you are making your way through the process.

Thank you! He has multiple debilitating symptoms… anemia, (unexplained), GI distress/inflammatory markers, neurological/cognitive decline, severe anxiety/OCD. So my hope is multiple specialists will be on board!

@summermaples I had 2 scheduled appointments before I came to Mayo. Mine was for spine surgery so it was a neurologist who examined me and scheduled other testing and appointments before I met with the surgeon. He had all of that information when he met with me. They do schedule other specialists depending on what they find while you are there. They may not know what direction to go before they see you. You could have your local doctor make a recommendation for what you need and get that sent in to the coordinator to add to your file. If you have a portal set up, that would be another way to send a message, but I don’t know when that gets set up.

I was accepted to be seen at mayo by Internal Medicine and got my 1st visit scheduled. After I see that a followup is scheduled the week after. My confusion comes in as to what happens in between those two dates? The person on the phone told me to plan to be there 5 to 7 business days and online it told me 7 to 10. I am traveling from our of state and don't know how to approach this.

Hi, @stillhere814

I hope you have had time to review what others have commented about visiting Mayo Clinic since finding out you would be seeing Internal Medicine.

You mention confusion understanding just what will go on between two appointment dates that are a week apart from each other. I am checking in with you to see if you haven’t gotten answers or if you still have questions….maybe even additional questions.

You are in a great place to get feedback from members. Myself, I saw Internal Medicine a few years ago as part of Mayo Clinic Internal Medicine’s Consultant Services. I remember having an initial appointment for assessment then a week or so later to wrap up a summary of my Clinic visit. I had access to the doctor for 30 days following. Maybe this is what is being scheduled for you.

I am interested to hear how you doing. If you are comfortable sharing more about your situation it may help others know how to comment as well.

When are your appointments scheduled and at what Mayo Clinic location? Have you had other appointments added?
