How long does an ablation last? Are multiple ablations possible?
I am a 20 year old college athlete (basketball) and was diagnosed with afib this summer. My athletic career is just starting so reducing physical activity is not an option. I’m currently taking medicine to control the afib. It is working but I’m thinking of getting an ablation as a permanent fix. My first doctor is ready to do the surgery asap. No hesitations. I was under the impression that the surgery would fix this problem forever. But I’m starting to hear that an ablation may only last for 10 years!! Has anyone had experience with needing a second ablation? How much time did you get in between ablations? I have a lot of living to do. I want to make an informed decision about surgery and the possibility of multiple surgeries.

2 ReactionsYou can have multiple ablations. They are easy, at most 3 days resting afterwards. They aren’t necessarily a permanent fix but can be. Better than drugs. Go do it!
In my case, I had 2 ablation a year apart and decided to have a pacemaker put in. My life has been much improved. I've had to have my heart rate adjusted a couple of times, but other than that smooth sailing. The heart clinic does regular remote readings of the monitor and reports back to me on the results. I have a yearly appointment with my cardiologist and her team as well. If I need an adjustment made with an increasing heart rate I make an appointment and come in for an adjustment. My quality of life has skyrocketed as a result....and I'm 79 so that means the few years I have left aren't burdened bt afib. Good luck to you!

1 ReactionI have had two, one in 2018 for SVT and one last summer for afib. So far I believe both have been successful.
