Hospital Stay for Bypass Surgery: What should I bring with me?

Posted by debking1021 @debking1021, Sep 15, 2020

Hi - I’m new to the group and have an upcoming bypass surgery. Practical suggestions of items to take with me to hospital that you felt were important. Thanks in advance.

Hi Deb - Today is the 17th, so not sure if you have already had your bypass surgery. As a woman it is important to have a surgical or a non-underwire bra that opens in front to wear as you are discharged from the hospital. Get one that is at least one size larger as it takes a few weeks to get back to your original size depending of course on how you are endowed. It is an on and off routine so you can wear it when it helps and not when it is easier to be without. I have noticed from other blogs that some hospitals let you know this in advance and others don't. So just in case. Also know that while the surgery is intense, you will heal and feel a lot better for it. Sending prayers and best wishes.

Hi @debking1021 and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. You'll notice that I augmented the title of your discussion to best reflect your question. I'd like to also bring @thankful @danab @karukgirl @mrsjaxx727 and @harriethodgson1 into the discussion to get their tips. I'm quite sure Dana will advice you to bring a long cord for recharging your phone.

Deb, do you know how long your stay will be?

I would also like to add the question - What should one leave at home?

Hi,
They are telling me I'll be there a week.

Thanks to each of you for your input! Fortunately I've had a few weeks to prepare. The surgeon says I'm having several bypasses. Strong heart and no damage. Looking forward to being on other side and healing. I've got all of the things mentioned - including the attitude. 😉 The phone journal is a great suggestion.

I bought a bag of Hershey's and Doves chocolates to have as a 'thank you' for an care givers that need a little treat or pick me up during the time there. I'm so incredibly thankful for their expertise and care with an extra measure of gratitude during these times. I will miss my fam greatly!

Tuesday, Sept. 22 is my scheduled time first thing in the morning. Appreciate your positive thoughts, vibes, and prayers.

iPad or tablet and charger (or phone) was nice to have after the first time period.

You may want hand sanitizer with covid. I liked having it even before as was afraid to get sick.

List of peoples phone numbers if not in your phone or maybe even on small piece of paper for Emergancy.

Wear sweatpants and sweatshirt type clothes that are easy to get on and off and same thought with shoes/sandals, all for when you need them first/later. It is hard to do things with arms in initial time period post surgery. You may be walking around hospital halls as part of recovery but hospital typically has all the supplies needed/allowed.

Chapstick/Lip Vaseline type stuff unless hospital has. Dental floss if you may need it unless hospital has as well. Possibly extra pair of socks. Less important: if overdue clip your nails/toenails a few days or week prior or consider bringing one.

Good luck.
