Hi @islandgirl3159, welcome to Connect! Was this your first experience with hormone replacement pellets? You should always check with your doctor when you have symptoms like this to see if they're typical side-effects or not, but In the meantime, I want to connect you with @larac7 and @trishie who have written about different forms of hormone therapy in the past. I'm hoping they may be able to share some of their experiences with you.

Are you able to tell us a little bit more about what you're experiencing?

I went to ER about 36 hrs after pellet inserted because my heart was racing and beating irratically. I had been using vivelle dot patch for last 6 months and most of the last 16 years but was not my first time using the pellet. The heart racing lasted full 12 weeks and has just started to get back to normal. My hormone levels measured three times what they did the last time I had the insertion 1 yr ago and over the target ranges But my dr said the were good. My GYN dr does not know why nor does she think that hormones are the issue. I went to two cardiologists, wore a halter monitor and the cardiologist said it could be the issue but no confirmation. I have no history of heart problems. I have normal cholesterol, normal BMI and am normally healthy. I am wondering if the compounding pharmacy could have made a mistake as to what they put in the pellet. Needless to say I will not use the pellet again because of the issues but for controlling headaches and hot flashes the pellet was more effective than the patch.

Yes. My heart actually went into Afibrillation. I was in hospital for 2 days and had to have my heart shocked back into regular sinus rythrm. My husband received the pellet a week after and his heart was racing for 3 days. I do not recommend this. Horrible and scary experience for us. It might work for some people, but it was just too coincidental .

Hi, @philiciaintexas - welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. Please pardon the delay in responding to you.

How has your heart and your husband's been since your heart incident and 2-day hospital stay?

@islandgirl3159 - how have you been heart-wise since your incident with taking the hormone replacement pellet?

Trying to let the pellet run out now and will never do it again. It’s difficult to find any negative reviews and am validated to hear yours but sorry your going through it.

I’m so sorry about your pellet experience! I had the same reaction plus my hair started falling out.
There’s a whole website dedicated to bad experiences with these pellets. Google it - you definitely are not alone!

I get them every four months….for the past two years…no problem.

Some people might be lucky and not have problems. But it's just luck. Hormone pellets are not as safe as the patches and should someone have an issue they cannot be taken off. They have to be surgically removed. Unscrupulous (or deluded) gynecologists pair up with pharmacists to prescribe them through compounding pharmacies. It makes them money. The dosages are based on unreliable tests. I had one try to prescribe the pellets (with estrogen) after I had already told here that I had a very adverse reaction to estrogen. People who are just trying to sell you something rarely listen.

I am sorry about your experience. It sounds terrifying.

I’ve tried to Google the website and haven’t found anything !! Just a few reviews from endocrinologists.

Sorry - it’s progesteronetherapy.com/hair-loss-with-biote-pellets.html#comments. I remember having to search diligently for it. Lots of comments and fascinating reading.
Hope this helps!
