holep surgery recovery

I had holep surgery in march of 2025. Three months later and I still leak constantly during the day. Night time in bed I can sleep all night and wake up pretty much dry, but on my feet, especially with activity I leak almost constantly, 6-7 depends guards a day. Very frustrating. Three month follow up the Dr. did not have much to say. Started myrbetrique and said keep doing kegels. Called a place to start pelvic floor PT. Very trying time. Can't really go anywhere or do anything. My prostate size was in the 90's and I am a 67 year old in good health.

I had the HOLEP done Dec 3, 2024 and still wear diapers/liners. I was in the exact same situation as you. I could sleep all night and only drip. Once on my feet and doing things all day around the house I would go through 6-7 diapers. When I hit the 6 month point I started wearing liners and can now go all day with just 1 liner. I did pelvic floor exercises everyday for more than 5 months. I now do them on occasion. I can now walk, golf, and bowl without having to change my diaper. Looks like you and I are the 1 off’s that need more time and exercise to get the incontinence under control. My prostate was also large and he cut a lot of it out. It has been a very frustrating 7 months for me. We have not been able to travel either. Now that I have made that turn for the better, next year we will be back on the road again. BTW I am 73 years young. Just hang in there. Michelle Kenway on YouTube has some great pelvic floor exercises. When I started doing those exercises is when I turned the corner.

I had HOLEP almost 100 days ago, still feeling burning sensation when peeing, urgency and frequency. My doc said that I´m TOO SENSITIVE to pain and my bladder needs to be REPOSITIONED before it gets better. Feling so tired cause I didn´t sleep well at night. I learn that, when you see videos of docs showing happy people saying - Oh, I had HOLEP, and didn´t feel any pain - maybe you´re being deceived. So people, be very careful when you decide to go for ANY prostate surgery

It isn't the procedure that is the problem it is the doctor. I had HoLEP January 21 2025 and I had NO pain. I was 81 years old at the time with a prostate of 201. They removed 3/4 of my prostate. Did you ask the doctor before the procedure was done how many procedures he had done?

My doctor is a well know surgeon in the place where I live, and has made more than 1,000 surgeries. If you look closely at - surgeons can adopt several strategies to minimze dysuria in HOLEP - you will understand that the problem can be attributed to the equipments used too, like laser energy used, for example.

I never had the urgency or burning after HOLEP. Only the incontinence. Like I said previously, I am 7 months post HOLEP and still have incontinence. I have gone from 6-7 diapers per day to liners. Still have the stress incontinence. I took a couple weeks off from the pelvic floor exercises and started doing them again yesterday. I will do them every day for a couple of weeks to see if I can completely stop the incontinence. My surgeon is young and hasn’t performed many HOLEPS. My prostate was blocking urine flow and I could not void my bladder which backed up my kidneys. Waiting to see a nephrologist next month to see how much damage I may have done to my kidneys. I trusted military doctors for too long and should have had this procedure 28 years ago when I started having trouble with my prostate. I never felt in control of my own health until I got away from the military hospitals. I am now voiding so I know I am not backing up to my kidneys as I did for 28 years. I usually get up 2 times at night to empty my bladder. Everything seems to be working properly except the incontinence which he told me could take up to a year to get under control. We all seem to heal differently and at different rates. Good luck.

While experience may help, everyone thinks they had the BEST doctor if they had a positive result. This is simply not true. In my last five years I have been given medicines that my body could not tolerate several times. Others take these same drugs daily for years without issue. Thanks for your concern. Some things are out of your control. You should have learned this by now.
