Had HoLep surgery 4 + weeks ago. Able to urinate during day. Awakened 3 to 4 times during night while attempting sleep. Have difficulty falling back asleep. Very tired during the day. Anyone having this experience? When were you able to sleep through the night?

Allow me to add. Have urges to urinate at night while attempting sleep. Mostly small dribbles. During day have a strong stream.

I still get up maybe 3 times a night after my Holep...guess its the price we pay for good urine flow. The positive side is......I feel the urge to go and am able to get up and go, and fall quickly back to sleep.

Hello ….. I will be having the HOLEP Procedure at the Mayo in JAX next week with Dr. Dora. I’ll be happy to update this group with how my experience unfolds!

Have you had the procedure and how is it going?

I would suggest a PAE (prostate artery embolization) instead. They go into an artery in your upper thigh and place very small beads in the two arteries going to your prostate causing the prostate to shrink. I was in and out in half a day and now have an almost normal urine stream. After a year I still get up twice a night, but am no longer taking two FloMax pills a day. A urologist won't mention it as it is done by the doctor that would put in a stent.

Don’t comprehend how the prostate shrinks sufficiently when it is enlarged from the growth and accumulation of the substance within the prostate that causes prostate enlargement which subsequently presses on the urethra which then restricts or completely blocks passing of urine. The HoLep procedure, a laser, destroys the substance in the prostate thereby reopening the urethra permitting free flow when urinating.

Yes pablo81…..I had the procedure in April 2022! It went very well and I recommend the procedure to anyone with a BPH problem. I didn’t have cancer….I simply had an enlarged prostate that was growing up into my bladder. The procedure went extremely well and I urinate like a 20 year old now!

It shrinks in all directions and therefore puts less pressure on the urethra. Believe me it works well if you have an enlarged prostate. They only found one of my two arteries and I now urinate normally, though I still have to get up 1-3 times during the night. I am also 85 years old and would probably have that problem anyway, even without an enlarged prostate.

I had a friend who had this and he is fine now. It depends on the size of the prostate as to which procedure they will do. Good luck!

Thank you for your response.

Do you have any side effects i.e. incontinence, retro ejaculation, erection? What was post recovery like i.e. how long with catheter?
