High calcium . Age 80. RA for 48 years. Very active. No cardio symptom

Posted by leshickok @leshickok, 2 days ago

I am 80 years old and recently had a calcium score of 1600 after a flag on my LDL at 107. I have never had any other flags for lipid profiles. I assume the high calcium is a result of 48 years battling rheumatoid arthritis. I am very active and have been for many years. I have never had any symptoms of coronary issues. I made an appointment with a cardiologist, but would appreciate any feedback from this forum.

You can have a high calcium score with no symptoms - until one day when you have a heart attack or stroke out of the blue. It's likely that the cardiologist will put you on a statin to get your LDL much lower to prevent any further plaque buildup. It's good that you're following up.

Cardiology testing and meds. Good diet and sleep.
Enjoy friends and family. Exercise as advised and go
on living gratefully in the present for a long time.

My very similar situation started almost 2 years ago. The only thing I can add to the previous responses is that when getting the news it really freaked me out. I was a mess. Try to avoid this. At this point in my situation I now have a better understanding of my health and aware of my situation. I'm on a low dose of statin (20 mg), and pay close attention to my diet, more plant based meals. I was always active and exercised and I added more cardio to my routines. I also visit the Cardiologist yearly and can submit questions to their office whenever I have a concern. Good luck.

I have always had fairly decent numbers. But I was a long term smoker. (Quit 15 years ago) Developed prostate cancer and scan for that picked up something. Had calcium scan and it was 922. Saw cardio yesterday and he prescribed one more stating to lower ldl (67) I am 62

The animal fats and other stuff we eat form plaque in our arteries. Over time that plaque
hardens into calcium. The higher the number in the calcium scoring test the more blockage there is. A good score is below 800. Mine was 1350. I had a triple by-pass 8 years ago. I watch my diet, especially for LDL.

Thanks for your comments! In my case, I’ve been a vegetarian for 45 years and had a low fat diet and good lipid panels. In my case, the rheumatoid arthritis seems responsible for plaque buildup. Probably associated with the underlying inflammation.
