Vomiting weeks after hiatal hernia surgery. Anyone else? Why?
June 3rd I had fundiplication hernia along with
Ventral hernia repair and removal of the gallbladder. Last week or so hours after I eat a small I’m throwing up. Anyone going through this any idea why?

@gofishto I am surprised you were not sent home with post-op instructions! Usually they instruct that you try small amounts of liquids, then progress to soft food and solids as you tolerate each stage.

CHEW WELL AND EAT SLOWLY. The air coming back up is trying to force back what you're eating. Can you belch or hurl if you need to? You always want a very experienced surgeon for this procedure as some might make things too tight. Fortunately over 25 years I rarely had to do either one. I wish you well.
Thank you for your reply, I will try to eat slower and smaller portions.
After hiatal hernia repair with Nissan fundleplication (sp?) 1 years ago, I have been unable to vomit. When nausea hits all my body will do is have horrible dry heaves

It sounds like others have already shared some helpful suggestions for getting through the weekend, especially taking very small bites, chewing thoroughly, and eating slowly.
Since your surgery involved your upper digestive tract, including the hiatal hernia repair with fundoplication as well as gallbladder removal you may also find this Connect discussion helpful. Many members share their experiences and practical tips for eating while recovering from digestive tract surgery:

I’m glad you’re already in touch with your surgeon and have both a CT scan and an upper endoscopy scheduled. I hope those tests provide some answers. If you’re up to it, please come back and let us know what you learn. It may help someone else going through a similar recovery.
I am curious, how are you doing and has your eating changes helped?

Nissen fundoplication.
You can't vomit because the surgeon made it too tight.

1 ReactionYes, that has been suggested. However, it is my understanding that the procedure to try to loosen and/or redo is complicated. At the age of 81 , have decided not To tempt trouble!

I hear ya. Hope that you don't have to throw up is about all that you can do. One would think that they could put some sort of device in that spot such that they can make it only so tight. I was lucky that I had a doc who was very good at it.
I recall before I wised up that drinking too fast was kind of how it might feel to drown or get waterboarded. Plus I had been given ceftin about a week before to kill off any chance of my mild cold getting worse. It did a number on my intestinal flora too.
