I have a very large hiatial hernia. The surgeon said he would need to use mesh the size of a saucer to repair it. Actually, I have a huge one and a small one beside it. My sister and my daughter both had mesh and nothing but pain and trouble with it. Now I am petrified of getting mesh. It is the size of a grapefruit. Please give me some input. Thank you so much.
I also have sliding hiatal hernia which stomach slides up with breathing. No symptoms of chest pain or burning. Just pain in middle below where the two ribs meet and inflamed throat and mucous. I have 3 inch HH, but LES has a fold.
OMG! How many years have you been dealing with this. Have you developed Barrett's yet? You should have your GI order an esophogram/barium swallow to check the extent of reflux and sliding of the stomach. Your GI or a surgeon specializing in the LINX procedure can also order an esophogeal motility study which tests the effectiveness of your swallowing. If your swallowing is fine then have the LINX done . It will stop the reflux . The hole in your diaghragm will be repaired at the same time so your stomach won't slide any longer.
I just had this done myself on Jan 22nd. My surgeon also undid a Nissan fundalplication from 24yrs ago that had slipped down my stomach making it look like an hour Glass. The LINX band of magnetic beads around the LES/ Lower esophageal sphincter has stopped all reflux and I'm heartburn free for the first time in over 24yrs.
I just had my Linx removed. My Mayo surgeon who put it in 2014 also removed it. She said they now know that it builds up scar tissue! I was unaware that it had stopped working and developed ulcers and stage C esophagitis. Now back on meds and the explant was way worse then the implant. She also repaired a hernia with mesh that was also painful! If anyone is considering this surgery this is a site in Facebook called complications of the Linx.
No. My gastroenterologist does not recommend it. Says it does not work well in most cases. I had enquired into it. I think I read somewhere that it was the consequence not a cause of a dysfunctional digestive system. Since I seemed to have healed/remedied my digestive issues, without any further need of PPIs which brought in their train a whole host of deleterious absorption issues, anemia, maybe contributed to breast cancer, I wonder if the hernia 'healed itself" or closed up. No way of knowing without an unnecessary endoscopy, I suppose.

What I have heard is instances where they were too loose or too right. I went to USC and Dr. Lipham was my physician. I haven’t had a bit of trouble since and I was having acid reflux 84 times a day. I did research before I had it done to choose the most experienced.

Upon researching surgical repair options, one of the permanent results is not being able to burp or vomit. This terrifies me!
Can anyone weigh in on this? Is there another surgical option where this wouldn't be the case.

Have you had the surgery? How are you doing?
My surgeon told me the mesh causes more trouble than it is worth and not to let anyone use it. Hope this helps.
