Prolapse bowel surgery: What was your recovery like?

Posted by tabithatwitch @tabithatwitch, Oct 28, 2022

I just had a prolapse bowel surgery last week… I was in the hospital 3 days. I live alone and it’s been rough…. The post surgery “ diarrhea “ is so bad.. it just wont stop.. I feel I am torn with fissures and the pain is excruciating.. I also feel full the moment I try to eat something or drink something… the surgeon’s office is very slow to call back.. I’m trying to eat what they call the BRAT diet but if I don’t get enough fluids I think I may have to check back in the hospital but can someone tell me what I can do about this constant diarrhea and how to heal these sores? Thank you

Is there anyone out there who has had surgery to correct a prolapsed bladder without using mesh?
I obtained Mayo Clinc's book on Incontinence.
The Sling procedure is the most common surgery to treat stress incontinence but physicians may use synthetic mesh material., which is a no go for me.
I just completed a 10 day regimen on Nitrofurtoin. Stopped taking Atorvastin which worsened my pancreatitis. The pancreatitis has now subsided. I am now on a vegetarian diet. Taking Vit. D3, B12 subligual, multi vitamin, began brisk walks daily on treadmill. Lost 10 pounds, but still experiencing abdominal pain over the bladder and intermitent rt flank pain over the kidney. Appointment is scheduled with a Urogynecologist in few weeks. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you

Has anyone had prolapsed bladder surgery without using mesh?

@tabithatwitch I was just wondering how your recovery from the rectal prolapse repair is going. I had mine on 4/13 but ended up 5/19 having a robotic ventral mesh rectopexy to fix the rectal prolapse that started staying out most of the time. It is much better but now trying to gain my strength back to what it was a year ago. This seems to be a real challenge. Take care. KLH

My recovery is going well. I still struggle with constipation and trying to balance it from the occasional diarrhea when I use a laxative or some thing to help.
My surgery was in the end of February and I still get random pains but overall I feel pretty good. I had my surgery and Stanford without mesh.
Where did you have yours?

Gaining strength after surgery or anything major takes more time than expected. Keep working on getting stronger.

@baz, so glad you came back to report on your surgery. I have rectal prolapse but also have proctitis, which evidently has healed but am left with scar tissue, and am concerned about that with surgery as I don't want a stricture to form in my rectum. I also am thinking of going to Stanford to talk about surgery but am so apprehensive. Thanks for reporting back as I was looking for your post. I just joined this site. Who was your doctor, if you remember?

I see you've joined Mayo Clinic Connect recently, @cc510, so welcome.

When I was being examined for a vaginal prolapse after things "fell down" after my last baby's delivery, they also found I had a rectocele. So, included in my repair package, so to speak, was a repair for this. I had no known symptoms of this and was rather surprised to learn about it.

After this surgery, I felt a bit tight in the anal area, but it felt normal in a few weeks. I did feel absolutely terrified trying to defecate for the first time after surgery, as I recall (this was 2012). I remember I was so worried I would blow out my stitches. The nurses in the hospital were reassuring, and it went fine with no stiches getting blown out.

Are you going to visit with a doctor from Stanford? Are you having symptoms from your prolapse?

I am going to have a defecography test to get a better idea of what's happening. I was diagnosed with ulcerative proctitis at age 18 and the doctors don't know why but by the grace of God it it now gone completely but because I had it for 40 years or more it has healed but scar tissue is there.

I have lived with a prolapse for 26 years and never had a problem until I underwent a very minor surgery at Kaiser to remove a small bump on the outside of my anus that, in my opinion, should have been shot with something to numb it and then removed. Instead, excuse me, but I had a quack of a doctor that put a needle inside my colon and I ended up with a rectal stricture that as I would push down to try and defecate the stricture would tighten up and get smaller, but I pushed and pushed for a year to get things out of my rectum. I finally took matters in my own hands and read up on how to soften tissue in the rectum and long story short I opened up the stricture myself but am now left with this very loose tissue where stool is constantly getting stuck and when I try to remove it digitally I feel it floating around behind the tissue. It's an awful feeling because constipation occurs and rocks eventually come out little by little.

I am thinking about surgery but am so scared I would end up worse and I just don't think my psyche could handle it. If I did do it, I would want to fly wherever I would need to go to the best surgeon possible.

Anybody had anything to comment would be helpful...
