Prolapse bowel surgery: What was your recovery like?

Posted by tabithatwitch @tabithatwitch, Oct 28, 2022

I just had a prolapse bowel surgery last week… I was in the hospital 3 days. I live alone and it’s been rough…. The post surgery “ diarrhea “ is so bad.. it just wont stop.. I feel I am torn with fissures and the pain is excruciating.. I also feel full the moment I try to eat something or drink something… the surgeon’s office is very slow to call back.. I’m trying to eat what they call the BRAT diet but if I don’t get enough fluids I think I may have to check back in the hospital but can someone tell me what I can do about this constant diarrhea and how to heal these sores? Thank you

Just FYI:
I looked into physicians conducting hernia repairs without using mesh products, performing the following techniques:
Bassini, Mcvay/Coopers, Desardia and/or Guarmieri Repairs.
Maybe surgeons can perform prolapse bladder surgery repairs without using mesh.
I don't know the names of those specific techniques.
Hope the information helps.

Thanks for replying.
I was told I would be in the hospital one or two days only. Why were you in for seven days? Where did you have your surgery?
I’m scheduled to have my surgery next month at Stanford in Palo Alto California.

@baz, @collenp I just saw your message. I will have the surgery @ Mercy Hospital, Springfield, Missouri. I worked for Mercy in Laboratory Services for 15 years before retiring over 3 years ago.
Both of my OB/GYN Drs. would never use mesh and they told me to stay from having any mesh used. My bladder was lifted up and attached. That was several years ago and it is still in place where it belongs. Now my rectal prolapse just needs to be pulled up, straightened, and attached (no mesh for support). I was told all done through the vag. Hopefully, by now my tissue wall is thick and strong enough for stitches.
I would ask if they were going to use mesh or if there was another option. I would hope you have a choice since you are the one having surgery.

Stay in touch and let me know how you are. Your date is way before mine. In the meantime take care of yourself and stay healthy. This is important before surgery. KLH

I am scheduled for rectal prolapse surgery on February 23 if I can get my cardiac clearance. I’m hoping that my A-Fib doesn’t become a factor in getting it.
I’m so happy to see a response on this thread since I haven’t heard from anybody who has had this diagnosis or surgery. I was thinking I was the only one out here…
I am nervous because of my heart condition and the seriousness of the operation. I would just like to know how other people did and what their recovery was like.
Thanks again for your input. Please keep me informed of your progress.

@baz Good evening, just saw you have Afib. On March 5, 2022, I was told I had CHF along with Afib. Since then I have been in sinus rhythm. I got rid of all cardiac meds and other stuff they just stuffed me with. I only take a blood thinner plus what I have taken for years. This has been a long road of recovery and my body is still in complete fatigue and slowly coming back. I worry about it also with the surgery. My cardio doc gave me the release. EKG and Echo were normal. So it is one day at a time and I am trying to gain weight which seems hopeless. Everything is geared toward diets and losing weight. Any suggestions? Let me know how you are on the cardiac side of health. Take care. KLH

Good Morning,
I was so telieved to hear someone actually had the proper surgery for your bladder. Do yo know the name of the surgical technique performed and products used. It would really be helpful to have some information prior to seeing a Urogynecologist that my PCP recommended.
Take care.

The post op sounds awful. I hope you find some relief soon. Where did you have your surgery done? I wonder if it’s the same procedure that I am getting… (A robotic ventral mesh Rectopexy with biologic graft.)
I understand there are 2 different procedures to correct rectal prolapse.

Is there anyone out there who has had surgery to correct a prolapsed bladder without using mesh?
I obtained Mayo Clinc's book on Incontinence.
The Sling procedure is the most common surgery to treat stress incontinence but physicians may use synthetic mesh material., which is a no go for me.
I just completed a 10 day regimen on Nitrofurtoin. Stopped taking Atorvastin which worsened my pancreatitis. The pancreatitis has now subsided. I am now on a vegetarian diet. Taking Vit. D3, B12 subligual, multi vitamin, began brisk walks daily on treadmill. Lost 10 pounds, but still experiencing abdominal pain over the bladder and intermitent rt flank pain over the kidney. Appointment is scheduled with a Urogynecologist in few weeks. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you

I’m so sorry that you’re suffering like this. Some years ago I went through a painful time that I really didn’t know how people could live through. As we all do I learned some things. One with diarrhea to stay completely off all dairy until I was healthy again. Surprisingly it helped almost immediately. Next to stay hydrated I use a product I buy on Amazon it comes in packets you mix with 8-10 ounces of water. I buy the berry flavored it taste nice and I sip it. It has all kind of good things for us as we try to heal. It’s Jigsaw Electrolyte Health Supreme Packets. Right now if you can stay hydrated and add supplements through these packets of goodness it will be a good beginning. Also I slept every second that I felt that I could. These are a couple of the things right off the top of my head to start with. Prayers. Please stay close to the group they are kind and loving. We care.
