Help Getting Off of Klonopin

Posted by mcoleman1971 @mcoleman1971, Aug 20, 2025

I have been on Klonopin for 25 years at 2mg per day and want to get off of this horrible medication. My GP here doesn't know how to help me and since I live in a small town we don't have any therapists that would be able to help me as well. I do not wish to go to a rehab center and need support through what I am going to be going through over the next year.

Thanks I appreciate that. My psychiatrist put me on Zoloft, Buspar,Wellbutrin and Klonopin and always said “ If it is not broken don’t fix it”. He also stressed exercise along with it. That has always been an important part of my life.
People that truly suffer from depression never really get over it but rather control it. My mother was horribly depressed her whole life and medicated with alcohol. It made for a tough childhood. I wasn’t going to make that same mistake. My son suffers from depression and my daughter suffers from anxiety. Because I was open with my struggles they both addressed their issues. My son is a lawyer and is currently a diplomat in Kuala Lumpur and my daughter is also very successful. I have been blessed with five grandchildren. My son and his wife have two boys and my daughter and her husband have three girls.
As I said above best of luck to you.

I feel your pain. I am so glad that you were able to stay away from alcohol. And, I am happy that you turned out great as proof by your two children that you raised so well. You need to be proud of yourself.

And, thank you as I am going to need a lot of strength...I won't lie...I'm terrified that I am not strong enough.

If I was 54 years old it would make a huge difference. At 74 not so much.
I wish you only the best.

I was strong enough to fight through my depression before I even knew what it was.
If I can do it you can do it and come out stronger on the other side.

I swore I would never post again but as I continue to read about people suffering from withdrawal from Klonopin I must ask how many people have overdosed while taking it.
It is labeled a controlled substance along with OxyContin and yet it helps millions of people with anxiety and along with SSRI’s can be effective at helping treat depression.
I know withdrawal is difficult but at 74 I would prefer not going through the terrible withdrawal process.
I hope there are other people that agree with me.
I have no balance issues and exercise 6-7 days a week. My PCP has a practice that caters to seniors and if they refuse to give up drinking she takes them off it.
Since I don’t drink or smoke and I have never increased my dosage for over thirty years she says to ignore these posts and look at each individuals situation. That what makes her the excellent PCP that she is and I am so happy I have seen her now for almost twenty years.
I welcome feedback.

@shelbym Can I just say that you have given me such great hope and a little more confidence. I may need you when I start tapering if you're available to chat on here?

So many are in denial about their Benzos. They seriously believe they will find doctors to keep them supplied until they die. Long term benzo scripts are over no matter what your diagnosis. Ask the people who found out the hard way. I loved my Benzos to at one time. They just are not a life long solution.

My doctor talked to me about getting off benzos as I noticed my memory issues start to bother me. It is not good medication for me as I age in my 60s
