Long-term safety, benefits of stem cell therapy for heart failure

Posted by gjmoynihan @gjmoynihan, Mar 22, 2022

I am looking for information relative to stem cell therapy for stage 3-4 heart failure. Is it available or only in trial at this time.

Hi @gjmoynihan, and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. To help people learn more about the proven therapies and the promise of developing therapies, Mayo Clinic offers a free telephone consult service. When you call the consult service, they can tell you about the availability of approved stem cell therapy at Mayo Clinic and elsewhere, and for what conditions. They can also tell you about research studies that are actively recruiting participants. Furthermore, you can add your name to a database to be notified when additional studies and information become available. You can learn more about the Consult Service here http://www.mayo.edu/research/centers-programs/center-regenerative-medicine/patient-care/clinical-services/regenerative-medicine-consult-service.
Or call 1-844-276-2003 to speak with one of our experts.

Cardiac regeneration is an area of focus for Mayo Clinic. The overarching vision for the cardiac regeneration program at Mayo Clinic is to develop new therapies to cure ischemic heart disease. See more info about clinical testing that span the disease spectrum here: http://www.mayo.edu/research/centers-programs/center-regenerative-medicine/focus-areas/cardiac-regeneration

Do you currently have a cardiovascular physician or a regenerative medicine doctor?

Amanda thank you for replying. I do have a cardiac team at Brighams and Woman's in Boston. They are great but I continuously seek out other options to avoid a transplant. I am currently stage 3-4 with borderline preserved EF. Vomax is about 20% and has been dropping. I suspect at my next visit in July my team may start discussing the transplant more. But they tell me I may still not be sick enough. I did try and call the consult service but that service is currently without staff and there is no one to speak to. They suggested i call back in May. Do you have any other resource to speak with? I did try to e-mail Paul (forget his last name) who is the program manager of the cardiac regeneration program but i have yet to hear back. Thanks again. I will continue to try and connect with someone.

@gjmoynihan, thank you for reporting back that the Regenerative Medicine consult service is currently unable to provide service.

Much of the work in cardiac regeneration is in the early phases of clinical trials - some in mice and a few have progressed to human trials. For heart failure (congestive heart failure), stem cell therapy is already a treatment option for patients with advanced heart failure due to heart attack. Now, new discoveries are underway to improve stem cells' regenerative therapeutic impact for many patients in need.

If you would like to consider a second opinion regarding regenerative medicine options or heart transplant at Mayo Clinic, you can talk with someone through inquiring about an appointment here: http://mayocl.in/1mtmR63

To inquire about available clinical trials, call 800-664-4542 (toll-free) and see more information here: https://www.mayo.edu/research/clinical-trials

Colleen thank you sooo much for responding. Although I have no history of a heart attack I do have scaring. i am curios if based on that would i benefit from stem cell? i will make contact as you instructed and see where it goes. Trying to avoid a transplant and also trying to see if this disease can be treated and reversed sooner rather than waiting until I am "sick enough" for a transplant. its a grueling day-to-day battle just waiting. thank you
