Hashimoto's Thyroiditis and Hives

Posted by kimspr3 @kimspr3, Sep 24, 2019

Has anyone gotten Urticaria, severe from Hashimoto's? It started in my 20's. Remember going to a movie my face feeling very warm, lips eyes, itching all over my body, Hugh hives. Went to the E.R. they insisted it was an allergic reaction to something. I believed them of-course. Nothing would take it away. Prednisone never worked. It was in the sixties so I will admit "I smoked" hives gone???? Every Time!!!!! I told dr's about it. Mar. in my case must have done something to my Immune system? I wonder if Mayo Clinic would do a little research on it? I would be so happy and very curious as to why that worked? Remission, than back again for years nothing helped. Saw a International dr. in S. Carolina who put me on Cyclosporin, they were gone in a short time!!! Remission. I was given Cymbalta, that evening they were back, again to the ER. Stopped the drug. Immunologist, I received shots every week for months. They are gone now and I hope forever! Many Endocrinologist, Primary Care Dr's never heard of Hashimoto's and Hives?????????

I had fought with hives since 2018. Allergist was no help. I was taking over 40 Benadryl during an attack. So I went to Alternative medicine, who did food allergy test. Showed a bunch of different foods. But in 2023, I went to NM. While there, at one restaurant I told the waitress I was allergic to gluten and soy. Her responds was “oh you have Hashimoro disease “
A regular person gave me an answer on why. Explained a lot since then.
Best part is I gave choices and off Benadryl. I have found a OTC histamine blocker and if worst I use up to 2 Benadryl now. ( but I know I have to be home due to a regular reaction to it now.)

Personally I like chlortrimeton allergy pills. Took them for over 60 years from when I was a kid and had allergy attacks. Zyrtec is ok too. Were you tested for Hashimotos? I've never heard of allergies being a side effect....assuming you went to Endo for tests? I think you should be tested by rheumatologist by blood labs for allergies. My allergist was a jerk and said I had lo allergies. When I asked her why the hives stopped when I stopped eating the food she said it was "a coincidence"!!!!

Hi, I just joined mayoclinic.org today. It is June 26th 2023
I was diagnosed with chronic urticaria about 2 years ago after starting out with a dermatologist then referred to an immunologist. He did all the scratch testing and said I was not allergic to anything. He then started me out on zolair injections 1 x a month. I get an injection in each arm. Prior to the injections my body itched all over and the hives were like scratching marks, however I wasn't scratching. Once the marks appeared I would then start to itch. I was also taking zertec once a day. Since taking the zolair injections my breakouts subsided but never have gone away. I also was prescribed hydroxine which would help somewhat, but lately my breakouts are back and I am feeling itchy all the time. I can't see my allergist until the middle of July. Could I possibly be immune to the injections? Also, prednisone didn't touch it. Is there anything else I can do at this point? Please advise and thank you for any help or resources.

@paula22 hello, I’m sure that you’re miserable because of the itching. I can’t think of anything worse. I would suggest that you try a food/allergy journal. Write down everything you eat and make a note if any itching started. Also, look at soaps including laundry soap and lotions you might use. This kind of list is helpful to the doctor.
Here is a discussion that might help. https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/unexplained-itching/ The members there might have some good suggestions for you
Let me know how you get on!

Hello. I went to Dermatology and I have the hives too. I work outside and it started these last couple of years. I have to wear sun hats and UV ray clothing or I break out. Just keep in mind same could happen when your older and I have Hashimoto disease.

Hi
I had hives for years. Usually during a stressful time.
Dr tried all the usual treatments. Nothing worked. Finally- ativan did.
Hives are often a precursor to hashimotos. I hot that diagnosed 20 yrs later. Once on synthroid, i never had hives again!

That's weird. Even I have heard about hives and hashimoto. I'm not a medical professional!

I can not believe that your doctor never heard of Hashimoto’s or Hives! It’s time for a new doctor! I suffer from Hashimoto’s and before I was diagnosed I was getting hives on my body and gaining weight. I had a blood panel on my thyroid done and lo and behold, I had a high number for Hashimoto’s and also for Hypothyroidism. I was put on Synthroid and Cytomel and my numbers slowly came down to where I am now only taking Synthroid 75 mcg. My hives only show up if I eat foods I am sensitive to. Have a food sensitivity test done by a good doctor and see what you’re sensitive to. Nightshades will cause these hives to show up again on me. Nightshades are a group of foods that irritate me, so I stopped eating them. They’re things like tomatoes, egg plant, zucchini. I also lost my taste and smell with Covid over 2 years ago, so it’s a little easier for me to stay away from those foods, but it’s also been quite awful not tasting or smelling for this long.

I have Hashimoto with hypothyroidism. I started getting hives in 2018 for unknown reasons and with foods I ate everyday. Doctors could only Guess on it. On a trip out west, I was at a restaurant explaining to the waitress I was sensitive to gluten and soy. She responded “OH YOU HAVE HASTIMOTO” so that started me in looking into it more. A layman giving me the administration I was not crazy. So as long as I stay away from gluten and soy I do just fine. My family doesn’t understand but cope with me. Now there is some sensitive to night shades, but if cooked, I can eat them.
So I ask questions when out and watch what I eat. The Midwest is trying why out west, they are very aware of the problem. Maybe it will get here sooner and long with the gluten free bread will get here . 🙏.
