Weaning off of Pristiq

Posted by tspoon @tspoon, Aug 6, 2015

Has anyone weaned themselves off of Pristiq?? I have been taking it for 7 years now and I am ready to be done, I do not want to depend on a drug any longer. I have tried to get off of this a couple times. Doing research, I didn't realize how bad this drug is for you and doctors are failing to tell patients how bad it is for you let alone how hard it is to get off of this. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I took Pristiq for a few years in 2012-2014. My psychiatrist felt it was a very good drug with few side effects. However, due to it being an extended release tablet that can't be cut, they did not give a good exit plan. It is also not available in very low doses that would make a taper easier. He gave me low doses of Prozac, which is much easier to taper off. As I would decrease the Pristiq, I would take a little Prozac. I would alternate days. It was an easy off that way.

I recently started pristiq the 1st of August
they started me on 25mg about a month ago. Then she recently put me on 50mg a week ago But it’s making me very irritable so I am going back to 25mg today for a week and then I will start Zoloft. Do you think the withdrawals will be horrible?

Hi all.
I've just started weaning off 100mg Pristiq which I've been on for 5 years. Reasons for weaning off ate weight gain
and mainly emotional numbness which has caused me to no longer feel motivated, passionate, loving and creative. After reading all the posts here I have decided to take one dose every second day for a couple of weeks, then every third day for a couple of weeks and lastly every 4th day then just stop. So far I haven't had any withdrawal symptoms. I will keep you posted on how I go. All the best all who are trying to get off this awful drug.

Please consult your doctor- a slow taper is highly recommended.

I recently just tried, keyword there tried. I wouldn’t say I was depressed, but I had uncontrollable crying spells. I have been on 50 mg I went down to 25 mg and then off now I’m back on 25 mg. I have a good experience with prestiq as far as helping me. But yes, trying to wean off of it very hard.

Is it possible that your body gets used to Pristiq? I take 50 mg of the generic desvenlafaxine. Back in 2023, my doctor put me on 25 mg after losing my son in 2024. My doctor increased it to 100 but it was too much and I didn’t like the way it made me feel so we went back down to 50 mg. I know that I am grieving the loss of my son, but I also feel like Pristiq stopped working. I feel extremely sad all the time, and I get irritable some days. I cry all the time, so I stopped taking Pristiq last Thursday 10/2 and by Sat evening, I started to have flu like symptoms feeling nauseated and throwing up so I went back to taking 50 mg Pristiq on Sunday 10/5, I don’t see my doctor until the end of October. So my question is, does Pristiq stop working at some point. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
