Has anyone heard of Apple watch study for afib?

Posted by mekane @mekane, Sep 23 11:29am

It is 3 weeks after my ablation and just had my first doctor visit. We discussed when I will be getting off of my flecainide and metropolol. We also talked about the blood thinners and how I am just at a 3 on the rating scale. He told me about a study with apple watch where you can get off of the blood thinners and just have a supply on hand if you were to go into afib. I am wondering if anyone has done anything like this and what are pros and cons if I choose to do it. Thank you.

All I can tell you is that I keep track of my heart rhythm on my Apple Watch. About four years ago I had a bout of a-fib. My watch recorded it, sent the info to my iPhone automatically. From my phone I was able to print out the report and I took it to my doctor.

My watch also shows my blood oxygen levels.

@SusanEllen66 I recently purchased an Apple Watch for the ECG app at the rec of my cardiologist. The Apple salesperson said the blood oxygen reading is no longer available due to an ongoing lawsuit…?

@knarney I believe that was several years ago. My watch has it and it’s only 2 years old.

I’ll check and get back with you.

@knarney the newest watch, Series 11 DOES have the ECG and oxygen.
The lesser priced one does not. See which model you have. Maybe you can return it or trade it in for the Series 11.

I usually go directly to the Apple website to buy, trade, and ask questions. They are the experts.

@knarney
The lawsuit is that they are using someone else’s technology. It is no longer available in the USA but I am in Canada and still have the blood oxygen.

Where in Canada. It’s my home country! Now live in the US …sadly.

I am so glad I “stumbled upon” this conversation this morning! I have had 1 episode of Afib (about 6 weeks ago). I spontaneously converted (after an 8 hour ER stay) overnight while I was sleeping, & have been AF-free since then (according to my Apple Watch). I have an appointment with an EP at the end of October to discuss the Watchman Procedure, as I really don’t want to be on blood thinners the rest of my life. So I have added this study to my list of questions! Thank you!!!

I believe the answer to the original question here is being misunderstood by the subsequent responses. There is in fact a study being done by several major US hospitals to see the safety of 'the pill in the pocket' theory. It's being conducted by using a special Apple watch. One has to qualify for this study. I suggest you ask your EP for more info. It seems promising for those of us who want to ditch the blood thinners.

I neglected to say in my post yesterday, sbout the study being conducted by sevrral major hospitals, concerning the safety of the 'pill in the pocket' theory for anticoagulants, that I've been asked to take part in that study. If I decide to do so, which is most likely, I will let you know how it goes (if I'm allowed to do such)
