Has anyone had their GFR drop 20 points in less than year?

Posted by like2dance2 @like2dance2, Sep 14, 2024

In January 2024 my GFR went from 53 to 43. It dropped another 11 points between May and August. My Albumin/ Creatine Ratio is 1500. My nephrologist seems totally unconcerned. I am scared. I also have MGUS. Does anyone have these kind of numbers? What did your Doctor say?

i have chronic kidney disease. i was diagnosed in 2018 but it could have been going on before that. over the years my egfr has fluctuated up and down. as high as 60+ to a low of 27. it is now 38 hoping it will go back up. my next labs are in 3/25.

Do you know the culprit? Mine’s been high for many years so trying to figure it out. I had a colonoscopy a couple of days before the blood test, so…..idk.

How often do you test?

REPLY

yes high blood pressure since 19 years old. I'm now 72.

I test every 3 months.

I hope you get some answers. What are you inclined to do? I wish you all the best. That must have been a terrible shock.

Does anyone know if having a colonoscopy several days before eGFR test can impact the result? I had a two day prep that was not like the first one and it was brutal. I did consume a lot of fluids. I felt my body was out of sorts and dehydrated from all the fluid I lost. The results were normal, but down a little from a year ago. September of last year I was 97. Since then I’ve lost a lot of weight, added exercise, eat a very nutritious diet, and gotten my vitamin deficiency treated. I was not expecting a decline. My doctor said normal, no problem, but…. I’m returning in 3 months to recheck.

@celia16 the eGFR is affected by hydration and dietary things so I would suppose that the requirements of the preparation pre-colonoscopy could have an effect. How did the colonoscopy go? I hope all is well.

You are speaking to the wrong individual. One colonoscopy when I turned 50
and now 76. I at one time was a Medical Malpractice Litigator. What I have
heard Doctor testify makes me reluctant to go to the doctor. In a
nutshell, my kids are backed up and no evident stones. Urologist believes
urine is backing up from the bladder because of restriction from BPH. I
have BPH but no symptoms. Wife says bullshit,No surgery. I live in
Waikiki Beach and as I have learned there is only a couple of Urologists
around.

@robtemery what is BPH? (I have trouble with acronyms).

Thank you all for your comments. My nephrologist has ordered a kidney biopsy. In addition to the decline in gfr in 3 months, my creatine albumin ratio has gone fron trace to 1498. At least if MGUS is involved I will know after biopsy, I hope.

I’m in the process with my rheumatologist to get diagnosed with Lupus (potentially Lupus Nephritis) and while going over my bloodwork from the last five years I noticed a distinct change in my gfr. In April 2020 it was 116, April 2021 it was 140, and in June 2023 it was 65. Ran it again in September 2024 and it’s back up to 110.

@hbrennan93 sorry to hear about your Lupus Nephritis. That can definitely be a factor in kidney problems. Do you have a nephrologist that can collaborate with your rheumatologist regarding your kidney care?
I am interested in you GFR numbers. I’ve never heard of such high numbers. I always thought the range went from zero (no function at all and total failure) to 100 (absolute perfection and nearly unheard of). I thought the eGFR is a percentage of kidney function. Are you referring to a different kidney function test?

@glenc why was your kidney removed if you don’t mind me asking?

@celia16 I read your post about whether having a colonoscopy could affect your eGFR.
In your response to @renegade71 you said “mine’s been high for many years…..” Are you talking about eGFR or perhaps blood pressure? You want your eGFR to be high, but not your blood pressure. I’m confused.
