Has anyone had nerve ablation treatment for cervical neck pain?

Posted by helenrose @helenrose, Jul 17 2:55pm

I have been having pain from arthritis and facet joints 4 and 5 narrowing for a while now. I am scheduled for the nerve ablation procedure and am worried about it, both that it won't work, or that it will cause me more pain then I have had before. I recently saw an acupuncturist which helped the pain for about 2 or 3 days. She is hard to get into see so I have another appt. in about 3 weeks. Also meeting with my doctor to talk more about the procedure. Also does anyone know if they use conscious sedation for this procedure? Thanks.

I’ve had two ablations in my neck area. They weren’t painful, but also didn’t relieve the occipital neuralgia.

I have the same thing but even though it comes from my neck a neurosurgeon was the first to do but he put shots in my head. Now my doctor can do. I try to wait until it travels from neck over my ear and into my eye. I have occipital neuralgia.

I’ve had several and am getting another one soon. After that getting the lower back ablation again. They can last 3 months to a year. You won’t feel it as long as the doctor numbs you - which will happen. Only thing that bugs me for a few weeks is the numb feeling just below my neck and 6 inches across. It goes away. By now the doctor has explained the procedure so I won’t go into that. Good luck.

I have had both Ablation and also Nerve Blockers...... everyone is different but the Nerve Blockers work so much better for me.... be careful though because lifting a heavy 2-3years old grandchild can wreck it instantly

I have had 3 ablations to my cervical spine. An anaesthetist at the pain clinic does it under X-ray or ultrasound. The first two were successful but the last one he only did one nerve so didn’t get the nerve causing the most pain. He puts freezing in but I still have intense pain for about 20 seconds. I then had to go back for a cortisone shot between the C1-2 which has helped. Only a neurosurgeon or an anaesthetist should do this procedure. Pain relief can last for a year or more as the nerves do grow back. My advice is to go for it.

Hi, @helenrose Just wondering if you have had the cervical ablation yet, and if so, how it went and how painful it was? I am going through the steps to set one up, and I would love to hear from someone who has had one. How painful is it when the doctor burns the nerves?? I've had spinal injections in my lumbar spine and I tolerated those fine. But it seems this may be more painful. Thanks! Wishing you well! Mike

I just cancelled it. It was supposed to be next week. And they use conscious sedation during the procedure. The nerve block test was questionable whether I am a good candidate for the ablation. I am meeting with my doctor in September to talk about alternatives. They also offered to do the nerve block test again using a different novocaine so to speak which might result in a more accurate reading. I am going slowly. I am trying to do acupuncture now regularly and individual Pilates helps. I would love to hear your experience of the procedure. I know getting things set up here through Kaiser takes forever. And I have some short trips planned and didn't want to cancel due to painful recovery. I might still do the test again to see if I am actually a candidate. In my first and only test they were going to go ahead even though my pain relief was very short lived, maybe a half an hour rather then several hours. So there you are. I think if my results from the nerve block test had been more conclusive and clear that I was a candidate I would have gone through with it.
What was your result from the nerve block test?
