Has anyone had a “blue light treatment” on their face to remove pre-ca

Posted by marywc @marywc, Nov 19, 2024

I had a blue light treatment on 11/15/24. It is most unpleasant and my age spots are darker and more spots gave been added. I thought this would get rid of them! I have not begun to peel yet, though, so I am hopeful. This is has been extremely painful. My dermatologist wants me to go this twice. I’m considering saying “no, thank you. Once is enough!”

I have had blue light treatments to both my face and scalp about 10 times over 10 years. Some helpful hints.
1) There are several treatment options for diffuse sun damaged skin. The two main choices are 5FU(Effudex ointment) over the course of several weeks. The downside is the potential for a lot of redness and crusting . I preferred the BLUE LIGHT.
The blue light is relatively easy and a short time commitment.
PROCEDURE: A nurse will clean the area of sun damage with acetone to remove any skin oils. Then the nurse will apply Levulan which makes the damaged skin sensitive to the blue light which destroys the sun damaged cells. Usually it’s left on for 1-2 hours. The patient is then given protective eye goggles . While sitting in a chair the blue light machine is moved over the patient and turned on for about 16 minutes.
WHAT TO EXPECT: As the blue light reacts with the Levulan you will experience a prickly burning sensation. Over the course of the 16 minutes the very tolerable discomfort lessens.
HELPFUL HINTS FOR DURING TREATMENT: A) Request a cooling fan which lessens the discomfort. B) Bring a light sweater if the fan makes you chilly. C) I bring reading material for the 1-2 hour wait and music for during the treatment.
POST PROCEDURE: Hopefully you’ll have a nice red reaction which lasts a few days. The nurses will give post treatment instructions.
I’m a big fan of blue light. It’s easy and effective. Obviously may need repeats if indicated.

Blue Light is for skin cancer and is unbelievably and outrageously unpleasant. I will not do it again. It’s over rated and fills the pockets of dermatologists; they get a generous kickback but the procedure has limited success. I’ve opted to just go to the Dermatologist every 4 months, and stay on top of my skin. Scrape questionable areas followed by cream.

Actually, blue light treatment is not for skin cancer. It’s primarily for actinic (sun) damage to hopefully prevent skin cancer from developing. A severe “redness reaction” is what is expected meaning the blue light was effective. No treatment is 100% so periodic blue lights may be recommended by your dermatologist.

I called it “The Blue light special” but it’s the same thing you had. Its correct name is “Photodynamic Therapy - PDT Blue Light with ALA” but with me they used Levulan cream. They do use blue lights, thus my nickname After waiting 90 minutes for the cream to absorb I sat with a bank of blue lights wrapped around me for 17 grueling minutes. Very painful, I’m on day 6 & my face is beginning to peel. But I have all these dark spots and red spots that appeared on day 2. My original question had to do with anyone’s experience -like yours. Did your age spots, dark spots and blotchy area go away, peel off. What exactly do you mean my “excellent results”. Describe those. Thank you!

I have had at least 20 over the last 10 years and though it is painful, what really help is durning the treatment you have a fan blowing on the area that is being treated. The fan (moving air) makes the process much more comfortable

Yes, I had the fan too. I don’t think they do this treatment without one. The pain I am referring to are the weeks of pain after getting home. And also not being able to go anywhere because of how horrible I look!

After subjecting himself to this torture multiple times over the years and seeing no improvement my husband refuses the blue light treatments now, yet the derms still push for them. They have this machine which is money maker for them.
I am 76 and got to live free in the days before sunscreen but in the last few years my glory days of boating and outdoor exposure are providing me with some age spots on my face, mainly my cheeks. I've been amazed at the fairly good results from using a Vitamin C Serum to fade these spots. It took about 4 weeks of daily use to notice fading. I'm sure most brands with the same ingredients are the same but I've been using Timeless 20% Vitamin C Ferulic Acid, it also contains Hyaluronic Acid. I started with the smallest bottle as a test because of my Allergic Contact Dermatitis, ACD and had no reaction. In fact I've been able to give up my daily moisturizer, using this instead since my skin no longer feels dry. It leaves it feeling smooth and heathy.

That’s what said, “once is enough”. I had my regular dermatologist “cold spray” the dark spots on my face and my hands. That’s the same spray they use on precancerous spots. This freezing removed ALL my dark spots. Ask them to do this for you. I go to the dermatologist every 4 months now. I don’t wait 6 months. This has helped me avoid the blue light treatment which I don’t think works. It’s simply a money maker for dermatologists much like other treatments and prescriptions are for MD’s. That’s why meds are prescribed so much. The doctor gets paid for prescribing them.

BLUE LIGHT THERAPY UPDATE:
I’m a plastic surgeon. I recently commented on traditional blue light therapy which I have had to my face and scalp multiple times over the years. The treatment is uncomfortable but tolerable.
TODAY I UNDERWENT A RELATIVELY NEW REGIMEN.
Instead of a 1-2 hour period with Levulan and a 16 minute light treatment, today immediately after the Levulan was applied, I had 30 minutes of light treatment. ZERO DISCOMFORT!!
The studies show this is equally effective as the traditional regimen.
I am a big proponent of blue light therapy for actinic (sun damaged) skin. This alternate regimen should make blue light therapy much more popular. If interested, discuss with your dermatologist if they feel this is a reasonable alternative to Effudex.
