Has anyone experienced falls and loss of balance

Posted by maryhines395 @maryhines395, Dec 2, 2025

Hi,
I was diagnosed in 2021. I have been having a lot of falls lately.
I'm just wondering if anyone else has had this happen?

I had numerous falls (8) in a matter of a few months. I was referred to a physical therapist who quickly suspected
inner ear crystals was the cause. She performed the epley maneuver on me and my symptoms were immediately gone! I could not believe the instant relief and I have not fallen since! It's worth a try.

@monnikers Thank you for this- I wish I had read your post earlier. I just had a BPPV issue Sunday morning and had forgotten that I’d had it long ago in the past. Scared the heck out of me, we have a lot of stairs in this house. Eventually (thank you internet) I did the Epley a couple of times and now my vertigo is gone.

Hi @boatman12 - welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. I'm sorry to hear about your balance trouble and falling often.

Have you gotten seriously hurt from a fall? I'm guessing since you posted here you have a Parkinson's diagnosis?

@lisalucier yes , I have Parkinson’s and no I haven’t been injured in my many falls. Thankfully

I have developed vertigo. I have fallen from dizziness. No meds work.

Lisa,
I've been sidelined from working in the yard. It's uneven and rocky. Lots of tripping opportunities. No more ladders. These are all from my wife and my own common sense.

My neurologist ordered a cane and a rollator. I'm ready to start admitting that I probably should start using them. I haven't fallen since I was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease. I'm being very careful.

I've fallen several times over the past 15 years, before I was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease. Broken ribs, broken knee cap, lots of skin tears on arms, and smashed eyeglasses and cuts on my face. Many other falls that didn't result in injuries.
My balance is terrible. Close calls almost every day.

@barryl - Ouch. What has your doctor recommended so far to prevent falls and further injury from occurring?

Hello @maryhines395

I want to join @lisalucier in welcoming you to the PD support group on Mayo Connect. To answer your question about loss of balance and falls, my answer would be "yes." That was one of the symptoms that finally led to my diagnosis of PD.

Similar to @monnikers, I also have had vestibular therapy (which included the Epley maneuver and other vestibular exercises) after I began PD medication (carbidopa/levodopa).

As this is your first post, @maryhines395, please share, as you are comfortable doing so, a little more about your history with balance, falls, and whether or not you have a PD diagnosis. Has a neurologist confirmed a Parkinson's diagnosis?
