Has anyone been prescribed long term use of Prednisone for COPD?

I was prescribed long term use of 5-10 mg of prednisone for COPD. I am now trying to gradually get off-anyone else in the same situation?

I was prescribed 20mg daily as a maintenance measure. After self educating myself on the long term side effects, I weaned myself off of it and now only use it when I have a flare up or feel one coming on. I slowly reduced the amount over the course of a couple of weeks and had no adverse reactions.

I was taking 10mg daily but am down to 7.5 and 5 every other day. I can't seem to stop all because it makes me feel so bad-weak when I cut more.

I so get that...When I am prescribed steroids, they make my COPD feel so much better and everything else too....but then when I stop, it's terrible.....

I’m in the same boat. Have been trying to wean off prednisone since being in the hospital last January. I’ve gotten down to 5mg a day but am short of breath and feel tired most of the time. I just had another flare up so the doctor upped my dose for the next ten days then I will start the process again. I feel much better on the higher dose. But I wish there was something else that would reduce the inflammation and not cause the weight gain!

I went through the same situation. Many of the inhalers contain some form of pred. Before I say more, may I ask what stage of COPD you are in? It makes a big difference.
Feel better.

@tova my vitamin D is insufficient and may be caused from prednisone. If my doctor didn’t have the blood work done specifically for vitamin D we would not have known. I take 2,000 IU a day now.
