Has anyone been prescribed bupropion + mirtazapine to treat depression

Any side effects? Did it help to have the combination of medication to treat major depression that has been resistant to treatment?

Thanks. I will ask about Zoloft and Wellbutrin if the Mirtazapine and Wellbutrin do not work. Wellbutrin doesn’t seem to be a problem as long as I do not go above 300 mg (450 mg caused agitation). I had been on Zoloft in the past but do not believe I was ever prescribed Zoloft and Wellbutrin at the same time.

I would highly suggest you get off your antidepressant. My son ironically had a bad reaction to Wellbutrin which is also used to help people quit smoking.
Try Zoloft and Wellbutrin. They are combined so often that my Doctor referred to them together as Wellofft
Good luck

Thank you. I never took Mitrazapine before. I have taken some antidepressants and had few side effects that were tolerable and other medications that caused me terrible side effects (Prozac, Abilify, etc.) that I weaned myself off. The side effects were not worth it to me and I didn’t get any benefit. They tried augmenting Wellbutrin with Abilify and it didn’t work so now they want to try Mitrazapine. I have been struggling with major depression for over 15 months and frustrated that medications tried and dosage adjustments have taken so long and I haven’t improved much and struggling to function. I really want my old self back!

I understand what you’re saying and I’m also going through this, my depression has gotten worse over the past few years and I have gone through so many antidepressants with my doctor’s help, he writes me a prescription for a medication and I try to use it but every time I get so sick from the side effects. I did read somewhere that some people don’t have low serotonin levels so the newer medications don’t agree with them, I think this is what is happening to me. I’m tired of going on and off different medications because it’s making me feel worse every this happens.

Mirtazapine is notorious for causing weight gain, if that’s an issue for you. Best of luck with everything!

Thanks. I took it one night and had restless legs and agitation at night and the next morning I was ravenous and felt like a zombie (very groggy/dizzy/fatigued). I stopped at one pill as I cannot afford to gain more weight. I am now trying the combination of Wellbutrin/Bupropion and Zoloft/Sertraline. I have been told that this combination works well for some. I’m hopeful and a bit desperate at this point. I’m not sure what to do if this does not work. I’m curious if anyone has had any luck with herbal supplements or alternative therapies for major depression. I have read that St. John’s Wort is helpful.

Most antidepressants are known to cause some weight gain but if they’re helping you then it’s worth it, once you’ve adjusted to the medication you can always take steps to control your weight.

I mentioned earlier that Mirtazapine was very difficult for me to take, the side effects outweighed whatever benefits it might have had. Many years ago I tried St. John’s wort and I found it quite helpful so I stayed on it for about 2 years, unfortunately I started getting side effects and I had to stop. I read that Wellbutrin was not a medication that caused weight gain and that’s a plus because many people have stopped their medication due to weight gain.

@daveshaw, I’m happy for you that you and your doctor were able to find something else for you to take and it didn’t cause you any problems. Were it possible that everyone could find the right medication so quickly, we would be so much happier in our lives. I have lost count as to how many different medications I tried to take and failed each time due to profound side effects that were worse than the ailment. Every time you try another drug you get messed up by the side effects and then you have to stop them and wait for your system to calm down, then you’re given something else and that doesn’t work so onward you go until you can’t deal with it anymore. Consider yourself very lucky and I hope that things don’t change for you down the road.

Yes, my thoughts exactly. I feel like a pharmaceutical guinea pig. It sucks. Currently dealing with wit severe insomnia but my depression and headaches are, or seem to be cured. However it took 1 new med Memantine, which is actually an Alzheimer’s med, a trip to the ER (that hasn’t happened in years), 2 nerve blocks and a few trigger point injections. I FEEL FANTASTIC! But let’s see how long this lasts.

No wonder why I was so voraciously hungry and eating all the time.

Me too. Right now my only battle left is with insomnia. I’ve been prescribed Ativan and Vistaril which obviously works but I’ll be the first to admit that I abuse the Ativan for 2 reasons. It also helps my headaches and because of my depression all I wish for is to sleep. It’s the only sanctuary I have left. No street drugs or alcohol or cigarettes. Just let me sleep please. I’m seeing a new psychiatrist today. I hope the he/she really really knows her meds because I know I do.
