has anybody taken azithromycin and amikacin

Posted by lili56 @lili56, Apr 6, 2023

I have MAC and bronchiectasis. started on azithromycin 500 mg yesterday and I am starting 3 days a week amikacin infusion tomorrow. Does anybody know what side effects to expect from these two meds and how toreduce at least some of them. My doctor said to let her know if I feel any ringing in my ears. I am still learning about my illness and future does frighten me.

Is that what they told you at njh. My id Dr is wondering why they are not recommending surgery since I am healthy in every other way. So we are going to try meds. Amikacin infusions for 2 to 3 months plus 4 oral antibiotics

Amikacin is very effective in cavity close. 2- 3 months will not do much harm to your body too. I am not sensitive to amikacin IV. I guess that is the reason why they recommend surgery.

Has anyone been offered surgery

I have bronchiectasis, MAC, but also TBM with >90% collapse Right mainstem bronchus & Right lower lung lobe is diseased. No cavity, but Dr. Pamela McShane in Tyler, Texas, after viewing my multiple CT scans, told me I need to get the diseased portion surgically removed. I've been on the Big 3 since May 2024, & now am on week 2 of Arikayce nebulized treatment. I see chief of cardiothoracic surgery at UTSW hospital in Dallas again in June. He would prefer I have the infection gone before doing the surgery, less complications that way. He would prefer to do robotic surgery. But due to location of the diseased area, I unfortunately may need whole Right lung removed & that would require open chest surgery. I feel better on the meds, and have weaned off of oxygen, but this will be a HUGE decision for me to have the surgery if I'm feeling better. I can still do pretty much everything but with a lot of fatigue. I have anxiety about all of this; but am seeing a mental health nurse practitioner & that helps.

Arikayce has a financial assistance program. Most of the pharma companies do this and the terms are pretty liberal. But if you are on government programs ie Medicare or Medicaid, those programs no longer apply. But you can look into Medicare's Extra Help. That program used to have an asset cap but no longer does -- but that has not been widely publicized.
