Hair loss after transplant, probably Tacrolimus: Anyone change meds?

Posted by hello1234 @hello1234, Mar 26, 2022

In the beginning, my hair loss seemed minimal and I took Biotin supplements. Now, approaching my 2nd anniversary for my kidney transplant, my hair is coming out in gobs. I believe it's probably the Tacronlimis. If you had this problem, what did you do to solve it? Rogaine for Women, Hairmax laser comb, change your medication, or something else? Please let me know your experience (I think I am going bald).
Many thanks!

I have hair loss too from the Tacrolimus. What biotin shampoo do you all recommend to stop the hair loss? Thank you. BB

Tacrolimus is supposed to support hair growth. That is the ointment. I never had an issue with it.

@mannism, The tacrolimus ointment is sometimes prescribed for repigmentation due to vitiligo. When I inquired about using if for my vitiligo several years ago, my dermatologist did not want me to use it because he was concerned that it might interfere with my stable tacrolimus levels of my immunosuppressioj for my liver and kidney transplant.

If you are a transplant recipient, please check with your medical team in case there is any effect. I decided not to proceed with using it.
How is your hair growth? How lonfg have you used it, and how often?

I was losing hair also. I think mine was due to taking imuran. I am 38 years post transplant. I have a lot of issues with N skin cancers. A lot of years on all of the transplant meds. All have been easily removed. My dermatologist suggested I start taking Niacinamide for my skin. After taking it for around 3 months, my hair completely stop falling out. I take a tablet in the morning and 1 at night. My transplant doctors told me it was OK for me to take it. Still a good idea to ask your doctors about it. My hairdresser could not believe there was no hair in the sink. She has told a lot of her clients about it. I order mine on Amazon.

I never heard that, quite the opposite. However the hair loss caused by tacrolimus is reversible with dose reduction. Of course, hair loss is a multi factorial event, could be for a variety of different reasons.
