Hair loss after transplant, probably Tacrolimus: Anyone change meds?

Posted by hello1234 @hello1234, Mar 26, 2022

In the beginning, my hair loss seemed minimal and I took Biotin supplements. Now, approaching my 2nd anniversary for my kidney transplant, my hair is coming out in gobs. I believe it's probably the Tacronlimis. If you had this problem, what did you do to solve it? Rogaine for Women, Hairmax laser comb, change your medication, or something else? Please let me know your experience (I think I am going bald).
Many thanks!

Hi @bencures I had a liver transplant 9 months ago, I started loosing hair in handfulls. I was starting too see bald spots. At my 4 month check up, I was told it was most likely due to Fluconozale, I thought it was tacrolimus too. I was given the ok to take "hair, skin & nails" which has biotin. I also started using mielle - rosemary mint strengthening shampoo. It took some time but my hair stopped falling out and seems to be growing back. Good luck to you!

I had a kidney transplant about two years ago. I lost most of my blonde hair the first year. The second year, it started growing back, but now it is gray, and a different texture. I’m happy I have some hair, but the Tacrolimus still causes hair loss. I take multiple vitamins, and use multiple shampoos and conditioners. It takes awhile to find out what works for you. Your hair might not be the same, but you will be able to make it look good.

Post 4 months kidney transplant and I just started having hair loss. It has been very worrying. when I blow dry or comb my hair I lose around 100-200 strain of hair. I have been approved to take biotin from my coordinator. May I know if anyone had their hair grow back ? And what level of hair loss did you guys experience? Close to balding ? Or major thinning etc..

Thank you!

I was taking Biosil after my transplant to combat the hair loss (lost about 1/2 my hair). However, my transplant pulmonologist checked with the transplant pharmacist and found that Biosil boosts immunity. So I stopped taking it right away. Every time that your body has a shock like having COVID (first time I lost half my hair) or having a transplant (lost another half before getting it back from the first time), you can loose hair. I have used The Original Hair Serum, which is topical so no issue with boosting immunity. I am not sure if it really does anything though. However, your hair will come back in. It is a natural process for your hair to fall out when the body is in "shock". Unfortunately, mine came back in with a bit of a different texture and drier than before.

Thank you so much for your reply. Did you take any supplements or use any special kind of shampoo? Also I’m on Tacrolimus taking 2mg twice a day.

I did not take anything or use a special shampoo. I just waited it out and it did return. I also take Tacrolimus 2 mg twice a day.
I’ve always had pretty full hair and I don’t think anyone noticed like I did.

@bencures i had a lot of hair loss for the first year after my transplant. I think it’s from the trauma of a major surgery. I was worried too, but in time it went back to normal.

Yes, Tracolimus does a number on hair. After kidney transplant in Dec 2022, hair also fell out in chunks. IT was frightening and yet thank goodness for hair wraps dealing with this situation made it more bearable. Only things was that people automatically assumed I had Cancer and was doing chemo.

Boitin in my opinion does nothing. This is only my opinion. IT maybe different for others. Generally according to my nephrologist team of doctors hair will start to regrow after 5-6 months. This may vary from person to person. IF trying biotin , I found the vitamins perhaps worked better to kick start hair growth.

Don't be surprised I hair comes. out curly. Yes. perhaps rare but it happened in my case. I also have jet black hair and it grew back silver grey. I wasn't psychologically ready to be grey but grateful hair grew back. A few months of adjustment yet I am ok with it now. Once your meds are reduced, yes this make a great deal difference. Tremors also subside. NOT go away completely yet more tolerable. Best of luck and hopefully if my number are normal my doctors will wean me off prednisone. Best of luck. Spring is around the corner and things will get better especially being able to go outdoors.

The transplant pharmacist told my transplant team that the Biotin was too taxing on my liver with all of the other meds that I was on. I also had an issue taking Turmeric, because it boosts your immune system. Double check with your transplant pharmacist prior to taking Biotin or any other OTC meds or supplements. There is an oil from Origin that helps grow back hair that is atopic, so it won't interfere with any of the meds that you are taking.

I am having the same issue, it will be 2 years since my transplant in July of this year. I started taking Biotin last year as well as using an Rosemary , peppermint exilir on my natural hair. After a few months of using the exilir I have noticed some growth in the middle where it was getting thin but I also cut off all my dead, split ends which helped also.
