Hair loss after transplant, probably Tacrolimus: Anyone change meds?

Posted by hello1234 @hello1234, Mar 26, 2022

In the beginning, my hair loss seemed minimal and I took Biotin supplements. Now, approaching my 2nd anniversary for my kidney transplant, my hair is coming out in gobs. I believe it's probably the Tacronlimis. If you had this problem, what did you do to solve it? Rogaine for Women, Hairmax laser comb, change your medication, or something else? Please let me know your experience (I think I am going bald).
Many thanks!

I am 1 year post liver transplant and started losing my hair a couple of weeks after transplant. I ordered the shampoo and conditioner called Routine. I used it for about 2-3 weeks and the hair loss just about stopped. After 3 or 4 months my hair started to fill back in. My Tacrolimus and Mycophenolate meds are quite high, as I went into rejection in February, but my hair continues to stay in good shape. It is expensive , but a small amount about the size of a nickle in the palm of my hand is plenty. My first bottle lasted almost 6 months.

@jennifer0726 Your story about delivered pizza is the reason my family calls me "overly neurotic" about food safety. Before my transplant, I literally ate almost all of my meals at restaurants. On the way to work, I stopped for breakfast, at lunch I would go out with my girlfriends at work and at dinner I would go out. Since my transplant, I have not eaten one meal out and I really miss it.... but I am scared of unsanitary conditions in the kitchen and unwashed hands making the meals now that restaurants are so desperate for help (inexperienced and untrained in the basics). Do you ever eat out or get take out now? If so, what do you order and where do you go? .... Or are you too scared to eat out like me? You are correct that there are definitely challenges being immune suppressed, but we are both super grateful!! ❤

I am 4 years post transplant. I eat out all the time. My husband passed away and it's just me it's hard to cook for one. I'm just carful to eat nothing raw and make sure everything is well cooked and stay away from the obvious, one thing I didn't know but found out that ceaser dressing is made with raw eggs , so that bring said do your research before you order

I am on Tacrolimus and Prednisone after my Kidney Transplant. I researched Prednisone, and it seems to be the cause of all my hair-loss problems along with others such as diabetes. Are you taking prednisone also? If so, look that drug up and be surprised.

Thank you so much for your reply. Did you take any supplements or use any special kind of shampoo? Also I’m on Tacrolimus taking 2mg twice a day.

Tacrolimus is supposed to support hair growth.

I never heard that, quite the opposite. However the hair loss caused by tacrolimus is reversible with dose reduction. Of course, hair loss is a multi factorial event, could be for a variety of different reasons.

I was losing hair also. I think mine was due to taking imuran. I am 38 years post transplant. I have a lot of issues with N skin cancers. A lot of years on all of the transplant meds. All have been easily removed. My dermatologist suggested I start taking Niacinamide for my skin. After taking it for around 3 months, my hair completely stop falling out. I take a tablet in the morning and 1 at night. My transplant doctors told me it was OK for me to take it. Still a good idea to ask your doctors about it. My hairdresser could not believe there was no hair in the sink. She has told a lot of her clients about it. I order mine on Amazon.

Tacrolimus is supposed to support hair growth. That is the ointment. I never had an issue with it.

@mannism, The tacrolimus ointment is sometimes prescribed for repigmentation due to vitiligo. When I inquired about using if for my vitiligo several years ago, my dermatologist did not want me to use it because he was concerned that it might interfere with my stable tacrolimus levels of my immunosuppressioj for my liver and kidney transplant.

If you are a transplant recipient, please check with your medical team in case there is any effect. I decided not to proceed with using it.
How is your hair growth? How lonfg have you used it, and how often?

I have hair loss too from the Tacrolimus. What biotin shampoo do you all recommend to stop the hair loss? Thank you. BB
