Grover's Disease tied to Shinglix Vaccine

Posted by gardeningjunkie @gardeningjunkie, Jan 14, 2020

A member of the Grover's Disease, GD, discussion questioned if he could have acquired GD from his Shingles Vaccine as he began having GD symptoms after the shot. It made me realize my last outbreak began 3 days after my Shinglix vaccine shot. I read nothing about this on the literature for this shot I studied on the internet. I saw my dermatologist yesterday to ask if there was a tie in and he said, "Yes, 100% this vaccine can initiate or cause GD symptoms to return". For those not familiar with GD look it up. It is an intensely itching and painful torso rash that comes and goes for life. The collagen in the skin is changed. I can't believe Shingles is any more miserable. I so wished I had checked with my dermatologist first. Presently a prescription is not needed for this shot and can be given at any pharmacy which has it in stock. I also did not read anything on all the pages I signed warning me that it could trigger this disease before I got this shot at Sam's Club. My dermatologist is Jonathan Bellew, DO of the Mohave Skin and Cancer Center in Arizona and Nevada.

Well, not exactly. I'm assuming you meant chicken pox and not smallpox. But, that aside, we don't know what the connection is between the Shingrix vaccine and GD. It may not be directly related to the chicken pox virus (although at my worst, I sure looked like I had the worst case of chicken pox ever.) We just don't know. Only that many of us got GD after the vaccine. There could even be the coincidence that our age group is more likely to get the vaccine and GD. Until it's studied, we won't know. There are studies regarding rashes, eczema and atopic dematoses following vaccinations of various sorts. Cause and effect hasn't been established. Perhaps if your dermatologists who do believe there is a causal link would at least publish case studies it might spur more research.

I guess I did say small pox. Sorry for the mistake.

I appreciate your injection of a scientific approach to our discussions on here, or in this case somewhat of a mathematical approach. As you probably know, you just used the statistical concept known as, "Correlation is not the same as causation". We have to be very cautious about jumping to conclusions just because two things appear to be related. That being said, I am not trying to say right or wrong about the Shingrix vaccine causing Grover's, but I agree that as is the case of so many things related to GD, "We just don't know". Much more scientific research is needed, but I'm not holding my breath waiting for THAT to happen. We appear to be pretty much on our own for now.

I have had itching burning and pain in my right leg since the second shringrix vaccination in 2017. It started 3 days after the vaccination was given. Never had it before. I have three autoimmune diseases.
It was administered at Krogers. I thought it would go away The severity is the same but not every day now. Very difficult. Two of my docs said they would never get it. Wish I hadn’t.
Had no problems with the old shingles vaccination.

Hi everyone. I was recently diagnosed with GD, very grateful for this group as a resource! I am a 54 y/o white female. I have not had the shingles vaccine, however I have had all the COVID vax’s, curious if there is any link? I had chicken pox in elementary school, and have not had shingles. I have been managing the rash that is on both chest and back with steroid cream and selenium sulfate 2.5%, and 24 hour non drowsy xyzal. I am very active run 24-30 miles per week so sweat irritates the rash.

What is the ratio of cilantro to all other ingredients in shake? I want to make sure I am starting with enough.

I also have an autoimmune disease - Hashimoto.

I absolutely agree with, "correlation is not the same as causation." I came down with GD three months after getting my second singles vaccine, likely just a coincidence. However, I've had shingles and would prefer to go through shingles again than live with GD for the rest of my life. If I could do it again I would not get the shingles vaccine.

No coincidence. It happened to me as well as a number of other bloggers on this site . It does appear that there is some link between the Shingrix vaccine and G. D.

I've had Grover’s since 1976. It’s called Transient for a reason. It comes and goes. I've had both shingles shots in the last two years along with four Covid shots and have noticed no increase nor decrease in my Grover’s symptoms.

Of course, I have been going through phototherapy during that time, and this I have found to be the most effective treatment.

I was diagnosed, via biopsy, with GD in 1992. Had the rash only for 15 years and in 2007 all hell broke loose and I itched very badly for 18 months. Dermatologist at UCSF prescribed Gabapentin which almost immediately stopped the itch. Took it for 13 years with no more itching until it quit working about 18 months ago, many months after the Covid vaccine.
Haven't had any other vaccines near the time I itched. Suspect it just comes and goes as it pleases. I will be seeing a new derm in the near future and will try to get some phototherapy.

I would say that it depends on how severe your shingles outbreak is. In my case, I spent a week in the hospital on a morphine pump when shingles covered the entire right half of my torso. Then I suffered from post-herpetic neuralgia (nerve damage), which itself is very painful, for almost two years afterward. Shingles was by far the most painful medical condition I have ever experienced. My GD is awful, but I wouldn't trade it for shingles.
