Grief: name it to tame it

Posted by judimahoney @judimahoney, 2 days ago

At our local monthly dementia support group, this month's topic included types of grief that caregivers experience:
1. Ambiguous Grief- sense of loss as response to psychological absence of loved one who is physically present but not emotionally or mentally available.
2. Anticipatory/Preparatory Grief: grieving someone who is still alive.
3. Compound Grief: cumulative grief, experiencing a series of losses over time.
4. Complicated Grief: A.K. A. prolonged grief disorder, where grief is intense, prolonged and significantly impacts daily life. Characterized by intense longing, inability to accept the loss and difficulty engaging in daily activities.
5. Dementia Grief: a type of anticipatory grief in response to compounded serial losses of varying magnitude and marked by the ambiguity that characterizes the experiences of loss in dementia.
Hope this info is helpful.
