Gratitude Discussion Group

Posted by Debbra Williams, Alumna Mentor @debbraw, Nov 24, 2018

Hi everyone! Just before Thanksgiving @michellegraffradford posted a blog called Gratitude Changes Everything. She suggested three techniques to help incorporate gratitude into our daily lives:

  • Start the Day with Gratitude (before getting up think of three people you are grateful for)

  • Maintain a Gratitude Journal to record times when you are grateful

  • Count Blessings – not sheep! (Review the day and remember moments of gratitude)

Her blogpost was so inspiring that a lot of us decided we wanted to form a Gratitude Group to keep the attitude of gratitude going. The blogpost area is not an ideal space for a big discussion group so I am moving the discussion over here to the “Just Want to Talk” Group. Let’s use this space to share and discuss our Gratitude Journey. I’m going to suggest that we each try to take a minute from the day and post here what has made us feel thankful today. It can be as small as a stranger’s smile on the bus or as large as fulfilling a major life dream – or anywhere in between. We can also discuss how we are doing with the three techniques. Sometimes it is easier to form new habits with support from others.

Michelle's full blogpost is at the link below. You may want to review it or print it out to help get started!

I look forward to hearing from others in the Gratitude Group and to having others join us here! Thanks to those who already shared great stories. If you haven't yet, what gratitude will you share today?!

@parus

Sorry I missed the party. I am thankful my little sister is retiring to FL with her hubby. I am happy for her. It would be nice to hear from her other than just Holidays. New Year’s greeting with picture of her happy world. This hurts me deeply. I am thankful for my cyber friends. I am so happy for her and so sad too. Why does she do this to her big sister?? I tell myself she means well. I did not respond to her glitzy text. I am starting my 2019 with caring people. Thankful all of you are here. She calls me toxic and for now I am. It will be okay.

@parus take care of you. If that means not talking to your sister than that is what you need to do. Hugs and blessings,
JoDee

Today I am grateful for this warmish house, as it is under 40 degrees outside. Thankful also for the cyberfriends here on Mayo Connect, for the wisdom imparted and wide shoulders of support. Here is to a beautiful 2019.

@jodeej Thank you. Only time I hear anything is a text accompanied by photo of her picture perfect life. Ought to be used to it by now. This one cuts deep. Haven’t talked for over 3 years. Is what it is. Upset with self for allowing to affect me to this level. Dumb, but it has. I need to let it go. I truly am happy for her. I just cannot respond. Time to let that part of the family go.

It doesn't make it any easier. Family is always family so it's going to hurt.

I've decided that I'm going to put 2018 behind me. Just like some of you have mentioned, I've been disappointed in people and I've wished my life were different. I've wished my husband didn't have cognitive issues. But I'm going to put it all away. Like @jodeej says, it's a new book, 365 pages ahead... I can't wait to write a new story. @parus - I know you have been disappointed too. Let's start over! I'm grateful for all of you cyber friends.

BTW: @gingerw - GREAT Rosebowl float!!

@gingerw .....Hi Ginger! I specifically set my phone alarm so I wouldn’t forget your float - and I wasn’t disappointed! It was beautiful. I’ve always wondered what it must be like to be around all those beautiful flowers. My Mom always loved that parade, as she played the flute in her marching band in high school and loved watching the bands in action! She passed on 5 years ago but the parade reminds me so much of her and her New Year’s Day food spread! I wouldn't have watched it if it hadn’t have been for you. God works in mysterious ways. Go figure!

Hi @gingerw

I took my mom out to lunch for New Year's Day and I missed seeing your float. I can't recall if you posted a picture of it already. If not, would you post again?
