Getting the antiviral drug Remdesivir after being vaccinated

Posted by erichess @erichess, Aug 18, 2021

My daughter is in the hospital with covid. The doctors want to give her the antiviral drug remdesivir.
I'm concerned there could be a reverse reaction from the drug remdesivir that may be detrimental to the Jensen vaccine she got 2 weeks ago.
Has anyone else encountered this situation?

Hi @erichess, I'm so sorry to hear that your daughter contracted COVID infection before the vaccination was able to take effect and offer protection. Immunity builds over a few weeks after immunization. (Data from Janssen (Johnson & Johnson) show that most vaccinated trial participants had a robust immune response 15 days after getting the shot, with significant protection reached by day 29.)

Erichess, you ask a really good question. A person can get vaccinated after being treated with Remdesivir, but I have not found any information about being treated with Remdesivir after vaccination. This is a good question for your daughter's attending physician. I would ask things like:
– Is Remdesivir effective after a recent COVID vaccination?
– Are there potential adverse drug reactions?
– Can she or should she be vaccinated again?

How old is your daughter? How is she doing? Are you able to talk with her doctors? Can you visit her?

My daughter is 42 years old.
My daughter questioned the doctor as to the safety aspect to receiving the drug after being vaccinated and was informed that it is now a common practice.
The attending doctors went ahead and gave her the Remdesivir and within 12 hours her oxygen levels began balancing out, "she was also on oxygen at this time."
Approx 24 hours after the first treatment they gave her a second treatment of Remdesivir, and now 12 hours after that treatment she is completely off of oxygen and her oxygen levels are holding steady around 93 to 94.
There is discussion of her getting to come home tomorrow if her oxygen levels remain steady.

I forgot to answer all of your questions.
I was not able to talk with her doctors, and was not able to visit her in the hospital due to the covid floor being closed to anyone other then staff or patients.

@erichess, I'd like to connect you to another fellow member @lauriekh who has shared her experience on getting remdesivir earlier this summer in hopes that she can share some information with you on her experience and outcome.

How long has she been hospitalized?

She was admitted Monday evening, "16th," and she was released yesterday, (Friday the 20th) . The 2 doses of Remdesivir seems to have done the job. She was sent home with a portable oxygen bottle and told to monitor her oxygen levels regularly. She is still recuperating, and will for several more days, but basically doing as well as can be expected. We do appreciate the interest and concerns.

I am fully vaccinated with Pfizer. I got Covid-19 and had Remdesivir IV in the hospital. I have COPD and I was able to be discharged from the hospital in 3 days. I am grateful for this anti viral.
