Hi, @achalasia2 I jumped out to read your profile and saddened to read how much pain you have been through for such a long time. I am glad you created this discussion to connect with others who know more about the journey you’ve been on with Achalasia Type 2, POEM and closed sphincter.

There is a related discussion about Achalasia you may want to review if you haven’t already. I also am tagging members who have mentioned dealing with or knowing others who have dealt with a type of Achalasia and POEM @margaretmary, @jenniferb, @dstb83bb, @franduffy and @candidough47.

There are books you can buy and other sources of information. All patients are different, and different foods work for people differently. Get info from your doctor. There s a medication that can help the stomach. A safe one is Motillion, but must be gotten from Canada. The one available in US (forget name) is dangerous and can cause serious side effects.

Gastroparesis, as you know, is a very unpleasant condition.
I have a milder form I have been told.
The drug Motillium, as another member mentioned, is not approved here in the US. Its generic name is Domperiodone.
It can cause cardiac arrhythmias.
I’m taking Reglan ,(Metoclopramide), that also helps empty the stomach faster.
I take it a while before meals.
It does help.
Regarding diet I eat small meals, low in fat, since fatty meals stay longer in the stomach.
I also eat slowly.
I drink liquids in small portions too.
I also prefer to lie down after a meal- it seems to help digestion.
I hope more members will share their experiences too.

@bori - hello, and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. I wanted to let you know I moved your post here to where other members were already chatting about gastroparesis so that you could join in their discussion:

- Gastroparesis https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/gastroparesis-13/

Glad to see, too, that you've already connected with @tsch and @astaingegerdm. Hoping you will also connect here with members such as @jlharsh and @achalasia2 and that they will have further input on diet and water intake with this condition.

You mentioned you need guidance on everything, bori. Wondering if you have questions beyond diet and water intake, as well?

@astaingegerdm
My understanding from my daughter who has used Motillium for years is that Reglan causes the more serious side effects and they can be permanent. Not all docs will prescribe Motillium tho.
Bottom line is people need to learn what works for them as there is no one thing that fits all.

@tsch
You are right. Not everyone can take same medications.
I probably would have tried Motillium if I didn’t already have a heart condition. That’s why Reglan was suggested.

I am glad Reglan works for you. My daughter, did not want to chance the side effects she knew about and to get Motillion, she had to have 6 month heart checks. Surprisingly, after being diagnosed with gastroparesis in 2012, she had a small bowel blockage and surgery in January 2025. She thinks they were related (somehow!) and she no longer needs Motillium, so maybe there was a connection.
Anyhow,
