Gabapentin side effects?

Posted by Sundance(RB) @sundance6, Apr 13, 2019

I am a regular on the Mayo Board! I don't know what I would do without it! Our doctors don't want to discuss openly the things about illnesses and side effets of drugs and other things. Anyway, my question to all of you is Gabapentin and it's side effects. I have been on it now for 6 months. My doctor raised me from 100mg. to now I am on 400mg. three times a day.
The problem is my tiredness! I happen to be in a friends office yesterday and she was taking some medicine. She said she was taking Gabapentin. I asked why and she said she had, had shingles back when and it still helped with the pain. I know the drug is percribed for many things that is why I take it for my issues.
I told her I had been taking it for about 6 months. She asked if I had been tired all the time, just out of the Blue. OF COURSE I SAID YES! She said it took her a year before she got out of the tiredness.
Let me know if any of you have experienced the same thing. Also let me know at what dosage you may be on? I know this is all confidential!
Again Thanks to The Mayo Clinic and Everyone who is kind enough to be open with their lives!
Sundance!

I read that another side effect of Gabapentin can be depression, especially in women over age 60. That’s how it affected me, so I stopped taking it.

That’s amazing. I felt very happy taking it. Almost like a slight wine buzz…perhaps it was due to the small dose or placebo effect.

Like most side effects, it doesn’t happen to everyone who takes it.

I take 2000mg (yes, 400mg x 5) twice a day. Been doing that for about 15 years. It still does not totally eliminate my pain, but not sure how bad it would be without it. I also take Celebrex and Duloxetine as part of my "Cocktail". I can function ok, but cold weather is the worst trigger. Other triggers include insomnia, eating too many sweets, and walking too far.

Side effects for me include Insomnia, tiredness, sleepy during the day, bad walking gait, periodic depression, 24 x 7 chronic pain and others. Never a moment awake without pain. You can get used to it, but as someone else stated, it is like always being like you've had a few mixed drinks. It took a few years to get to my "Cocktail" combination. Tried every med there is and these seem to be best to deal with combination of side effects. The dosage of Gabapentin is the maximum allowed.

Life is not always fair to us mortals. You just have to deal with your demons.

That sounds really intense. I am glad you get some relief with medication. Do you mind saying what type of pain you take Gabapentin for? I’ve read it’s prescribed off label for several conditions.

Hi, I have peripheral neuropathy in my feet and legs, and severe arthritis.

I have been on Gabapentin most recently for rib injury- helps. 300 mg twice a day- can take it 3 times a day.
I have not noticed any side effects. However, Gabapentin can cause a wide range of side effects.
My dogs have taken it.
I heard recently that postop patients are given Gabapentin instead of opioids.

not just a few days ago i commented on how it can be used to help you sleep, now am once again having yet another episode of trigeminal neuralgia, an MS symptom or i dunno, thing, these episodes increase, more times per year and last longer. My balance is awful re MS, and dosing...I couldn't live with what my beloved now very ill possibly gone neurologist suggested originally, killed my back walking with cane & taking maybe too much gabapentin, so found dosing suggestions from Cleveland State University, am trying this now, dunno if it will work or not: 100 mgam, mg afternoon, 100 at bed day one, increase by 100 mg everyday till i reach 300 mg, possibly just 300 at bedtime, which i prefer, till eventually if necessary
can increase dose up to 300 to 600 mg a day,
900-3600 mg daily in the end, and they list vertgo, smnesia, confusion, drowsiness, weight gain, depression, peripheral edema and more as possible side effects! i'm smiling as i type, little sparks flying through my mouth, left side.... am so used to this by now, find it tedious, boring.... will continue eating soft foods, have discovered hard boiled egg, soy sauce, mayo, half 1 avocado delicious . it's my only meal a
day. ice cream...when my aide comes thursday will ask her to please buy me more.

am 65 just recently. apart from the usual MS plaints, watching my dad, now @95, staying healthy as can be is a marvel,. the most depressing thing i find lately is wonderful actors whom i love dŷing almost every day someone else. i don't know them, but will miss them dreadfully.

Can you private message me the name of the product? My Rheumy said it may help and couldn’t hurt.
