Frequency of flareups for COPD enough to have to go on anabiotic’s

Posted by romoney1 @romoney1, Jul 6 10:23am

I was wondering how many frequencies people seem to have say a month six months mine seem to be every month and a half or two I have to go to the hospital and get antibiotics and steroid shot in order to get rid of the excess phlegm. I can’t get rid of enough of it. It just keeps producing. Can anybody give me the light up on that?

Are you in the city or in an area prone to wildfire smoke or even in a rural area with a lot of pollen?
I’m in a semi-rural area and we have invasive (non-native) plants that have TONS of pollen. It affects my breathing as well as my allergies. During peak season, which used to be June-September but not is April or May-October, I take 4 (yes, four) 24-hour allergic medications. 2 pills, 12 hours alert, nasal spray, and eye drops.
For my asthma, I added Serevant (sp?) and am going to start using my nebulizer for my COPD.
Sadly, it - the air - doesn’t seem to be getting better. I take the symptoms one at a time.

I take 3 allergy noses sprays and one allergy oral pill (was zyrtec now 60mg allegra) daily to keep allergies under control. I was having 1-6 exacerbations/year until last November when my lung doc switched my 3 inhalers to Trelegy and also added an injected biologic, Dupixent.

Since then, I haven’t had any exacerbations. I’m fortunate that this new combo has really helped. I used to have eosinophils >300!

I’ve never started maintenance azithromycin as we prefer to save it for use when I have flare ups.

Are you on a nebulizer? Oxygen? Certain dairy products (ice cream) can be a big phlegm producer… sorry to hear you have to go to the hospital so much.

I am on oxygen I like ice cream once in a while, but I don’t have very much or dairy products Any other Ted Betts you can help me with I do eat cheese. I guess that is a dairy product isn’t it might have to cut that out.

I use O2 for exertion, sleep and altitudes. I use nebulizer for 3% saline and aerobika when I have mucus. None of my current Rx require a nebulizer.
My big issue is remembering to take Trelegy carefully so it doesn’t cause me to cough it out. I’m usually pretty successful but admit I have to be very deliberate in taking it and holding my breath for 10 seconds or so afterwards.

Sounds like you are doing pretty well… my husband is on Trelegy..nebulizer, 24/7 oxygen….mucus and dry mouth are always a problem …. noticeable phlegm with dairy products…he did see ENT to make sure the phlegm wasn’t something else… seems like it’s just part of COPD… I have noticed that the cough is the key… Anytime he starts to cough. I bring him in to the doctor.. this way, I can get him on antibiotics quickly and we can address the exacerbation early on… while steroids help… To get off of them is something else. Good luck to you… Sounds like you are on top of things.

I have been on arithomycin ( 500mg)for years 3 times a week. I also take Ipatropium Bromide nasal spray twice a day. I have severe allergies and I've notice in the past anytime I became ill or had exasperation the root cause seem to be my sinuses. Knock on wood no ER visits for 7 years now.
