Fodmap Eating Plan

Posted by Teresa, Volunteer Mentor @hopeful33250, Jun 13, 2020

I will be starting on the fodmap eating plan next week and I'm looking for some suggestions about following this plan for the first four weeks. Did you have the guidance of a dietician? Did you find any books, recipes, YouTube videos that helped you? I'm also wondering how you went about the addition of foods after the four-week restricted period?

Any success stories (I'd really like to hear them). Anything that was particularly helpful or difficult for you?

Has anyone tried Fodzyme (see link)?Supposed to be enzymes that help digest garlic and broccoli that contain fructans and GOS?

I made a really good asian sauce for salmon in the air fryer last night. It included garlic and soy sauce, and I ate it with onions, red bell peppers, and broccoli. My stomach very much DIDN’T like it, and let me know all evening! I’ve done the FODMAP diet before and know that these foods bother my stomach.

I was searching the web for what to take to calm my stomach, and Fodzyme came up. Sounds like a good option, but I tend to not take things that I don't know if I can trust. Anyone know anything about Fodzyme?

@triciaot I have been taking Fodzyme for about 4 months now and find that it does make a difference with foods that I have a hard time digesting. It's worth a try!

In my opinion, the FODMAP is different for different people. Much depends upon why you’re on the FODMAP diet ie, is it that you’re SIBO, IMO, Celiac or some other mix of issues. Hopefully you know the problem and were tested by your doctor. A good dietitian familiar with your issue would be most helpful. In any event, the digestive system is slow and it is difficult many times to tell what is causing the problem. ( Was it the sugar this morning or the gluten at lunch etc). Be patient and know that you are not alone in trying to understand your triggers and how to deal with your problem. Good luck.

I haven't tried Fodzyme but have been playing with taking Beano which is also an enzyme but maybe not as fancy as Foszyme. I take it before any meal and it seems to be helping. I have struggled with IBS-D for forty years and have been gluten free for 15 years. I have given up stone fruits along with some other fruits like grapes. I also have GI problems with onions (except the green part of scallions) and lots of garlic. As I've aged I also have a hiatal hernia and a little gerd. I did ask my gastro about Fodzyme and she said it does work for some people.

I’ve been using Fodzyme for about 6 months with pretty good success. I have travel packets for eating away from home which are convenient. I’ve found that on some foods that are considered high on the FODMAP chart Fodzyme didn’t do a great job or I didn’t put enough on my food. Worth a try.
