Fluoxetine (Prozac): How to get off it?

Posted by amira @amira, Oct 23, 2018

I want to go off Fluoxetine (40 MG per day). Can I just stop talking this medicine?

@robert50 - welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. Sorry to hear fluoxetine (Prozac) does not make you feel any better.

Have you had the chance to speak to your prescribing doctor about this? If so, what did he or she say? Is a different dosage or a different medication on the table for you?

I used Prozac as a bridge to get off of Effexor. I found Prozac very easy to get off of.

It would be good to work with your prescribing doctor to wean off the medication. Is it fluoxetine (Prozac) or paroxetine (Paxil)? They are different medications.

Do you have side effects from the medication? Do you no longer benefit from being on the medication and that is why you want to stop it? Why stop now after 25 years? Do you think you need a different medication?

When I tried fluoxetine (Prozac), I got brain zaps and had to stop after being on 20 mg for a month or two and then they increased it to 40 mg (stopped after being on the increased dose for a 2-3 weeks).

@dlydailyhope what are brain "zaps"?

I went from Prozac to Cymbalta with very little problems. Prozac was pretty easy to get off of and I had been on it for years.
