Fearing risks of Prolia

Posted by slr1 @slr1, Jan 6 8:55pm

I am going to my pcp tomorrow morning to discuss whether to start Prolia or Jubbonti after getting dexa scan results showing my osteoporosis has gotten worse. I took Ralaxifene for the last 2 years and it didn't help. I have researched these 2 drugs and have read a ton of bad side effects from patient reviews and I am really nervous to try! After taking Boniva just one time in the past, I felt like I was ran over by a truck for 3 days and I refused to ever take a biphosphate again. I am thinking about not starting a new drug and exercising more. Any input is much appreciated!

I share those fears, and am weighing if I am more afraid of fractures and ending in a wheel chair, or of the side effects of Prolia.

I think I am more afraid of the fractures.

Have you had an anabolic medication?

Hi, RN here.
I tried alendronate , which helped initially...went off of it with better results.
few yrs later much worse dexa results.. I know exactly your worries...me too
I researched, asked others' opinions, and drove myself nuts...prolia vs others...I didnt want to take any...
a nurse friend told me after 2 years of zero side effects...fer scans were much better with zero side effects...so I tried it...
have had zero side effects... scans much improved..
everyone is different, nothing guaranteed...I figured I would either break a bone or have a stroke over worrying...... I gave myself a day to make a decision... and stop all the googling and opinions...Good luck, I know its hard

I broke an ankle literally walking across the living room...granted, a simple fracture, but non weight bearing for 6 weeks...a real pain for a nurse.
needing help to get to bathroom, getting dressed, getting to dr. appt...missing work and volunteering...my poor husband was great, but cooking is not his area...You do not want a fracture...by the way, I always have eaten all those foods recommended for osteoporosis...didnt help my ankle...good luck

As someone else asked, have you considered an anabolic medication? You mention you are seeing your PCP about your osteoporosis. I’d recommend asking your PCP for a referral to an endocrinologist specializing in metabolic bone diseases instead before you start Prolia.

Prolia has a risk of rebound fractures if you have to stop it. The protocol for stopping it includes going on a bisphosphonate which you don’t want to do. An endocrinologist can help you carefully weigh all the options. If you have heart disease, you’d see a cardiologist so it makes sense that should see a specialist for this disease as well.

@oopsiedaisy

Yep. I agree and make sure that you are asking for a treatment plan with the doctors rational for the steps in the plan.

At today's pcp appt, I learned she misread the dexa scan report and my lumbar T score was not significantly worse than scan 2 years ago, but a slightly better number. My hip and femoral score was slightly worse. We made a plan. For now I am staying on Ralaxifene, scheduling a consult with an endocronologist as recommended, self-paying for a dexa scan at the end of the year, then will decide whether to do the Prolia route. I do not want any fracture of anything!!!
I thank each one of you gals for your input and advice! I will continue with this group! So glad I found you all!!!
