Falling Asleep While Eating Lunch!

Posted by SusanEllen66 @SusanEllen66, May 1, 2023

Daytime sleepiness for me, is becoming increasingly annoying. Last week I actually fell asleep for a brief few seconds with my fork in my hand over a salad. Actually, it happened more than once in a minute or two. I fought to stay awake, then decided to go lay down. I slept for one hour, got up and realized that I was still tired. I went back to bed and slept an3 hours!
The night before was like any other. I usually get 8-9 hours sleep every night.
I have fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, peripheral neuropathy, and Vasculitis. Of course these diseases cause fatigue. I have not changed medication recently…
Anyone else with fibromyalgia, or CFS have any similar issues?
Thanks!

Have you been tested for Thyroid functionality? When mine was vastly undertreated, I was falling asleep unexpectedly during the day (even in meetings), brain fog was common to the point I saw some emails I had sent (afterwards) and they were high in gibberish. Quite embarassing.

I wish you luck. Because of insurance denying medications, as many do to treat autoimmune, specifically fibromyalgia are off script AND they don’t want to pay for brands which many are, I have gone through 5 types of medications for hypersomnalence. I am currently on one that unfortunately is shorter lived in my system than the 10 hours, but during it’s effective period, it gives me a feeling of “well being”, not an “upper”, and gives me part of the day to look forward to.
Good luck to you, sincerely. Stay hopeful and don’t give up. Your health, just like others with a visible alignment, and it is as critical and you should be treated as such. You have the right as any individual to request and expect the proper care and treatment. You should not be categorized as a “less than” patient by insurance or providers, and be put in the easy care/denial column. If you are finding that, contact the medical condition’s associations, or look into renowned medical facilities and highly regarded teaching universities for care. They do care and have specialists that coordinate between departments which is often needed with autoimmune issues. Many have satellite locations and virtual coordination.
Best wishes for a journey with relief.

@megankk thank you so much for your kind words.
I am currently waiting for pre-approval from my insurance company for the medication prescribed to me for the hypersomnia. It is Armodafinil.
Did you take that?

I also started taking the amino acid, L-Tyrosine. It’s supposed to help with fatigue. So far I haven’t noticed anything happening…

I have watched videos from the Idiopathic Hypersomnia Foundation. There’s really not a lot to say about this disorder right now…

Now, it’s time for bed. I’m tired 😴

By chance, could you also have sleep apnea?
I too could fall asleep at the table and even at a red light, driving. Forget being awake early evening. I tested at 90 interruptions per hour. CPAP machine used now and 2-3 times per hour. Way more energy.

@jmattiii thanks for checking. No, I don’t have sleep apnea.
I have idiopathic hypersomnia. My brain is not functioning properly so I’m not getting enough deep sleep at night.

@megankk just a follow. My insurance company has approved the medication, I haven’t gotten it yet, it looks like it’s going to be a bit expensive.

I am not sure if this is helpful but with 4 Autoimmune's i know that fatigue is a given but i had not idea that taking Celebrex or Ibuprofen make me even more sleepy during the day (apparently it can be hereditary)
Instead the dr. has put me on Cordilox 180SR...... takes the edge off amoung all the medications i am on.
take care

Central sleep apnea is different than obstructive. I have both. Your brain can actually forget to tell your body to breathe.
