Eyelids stuck to eyeball at night

Posted by kathleenintexas @kathleenintexas, Mar 14, 2023

Woke up in the night five years ago and could not open my eyes without extreme pain. I massaged the eyes and that seemed to help. I would grope my way to the bathroom and splash water on them and that also would help so I could open them. Saw an ophthalmologist who prescribed eye drops. Began using saline drops before bedtime, but would still wake up with the eyes 'glued' shut. It is the eyelid sticking to the eyeball. The closest thing I could find when researching was corneal erosion. The massaging does not help anymore, so I keep the eye drops close to the bed and when I wake up in the night I use them so I can open my eyes. So, I am managing it, but still wondering what is going on and if anyone else has this condition.

@buddabu

Have you seen a rheumatologist? I have Sjogren's and have experienced the problem you describe.

@buddabu yes, I don’t have Sjogren’s. I’m sorry you do!

My eyelids get inflamed and irritated. Actually, they have been doing well, and it’s probably because I’m on anti-inflammatory medication for other things.

I had EXACTLY what you are talking about. I would wake up in the morning and not be able to open or move my eyeballs without pain or discomfort. I would slowly try to massage my eyeballs with my fingers through my eyelids, and slowly try to shift my eyeballs from left to right, then all around. One morning, I opened my eyes quickly and screamed in pain. It caused a fissure in my eye and I ha to be rushed to my eye doctor in extreme pain. It was agony, and my would not stop crying. My doctor put me on Gentamycin, which is an antibiotic in high grade petroleum jelly, and had me on that for about a month. Then he had me using Lacri Lube. But now it's almost impossible to buy Lacri Lube. The cause was never stated, but I ended up having cataract surgery and lens replacement to help me see due in part to Prednisone. Prednisone is known to cause eye problems. However, even thought I am off prednisone, the problem still exists, just not as bad. Diuretics for BP were also greatly reduced.

Have you tried warm eye pads on your eyes? There are oil glands at the bottom of your eyes that moisten them. If they get clogged, no fluid can refresh your eyes. You can massage directly under your eyes to loosen these glands. They are called Mybomian (sp?) glands. Let me know how you make out.

I have the same symptoms. In my case I have corneal erosion (excruciating pain) caused because my eyes do not close completely shut at night while sleeping so eyes dry out. I can't tell that they do not shut all the way, so I was surprised. I just got an eye mask called Tranquileyes to keep eyes shut at night and hoping this works. I sincerely hope you can resolve your eye issue, I know how painful this is.

Hello @marils and @violetangel1111 , I found a few other petroleum jelly based eye lubricants, now that LacriLube is hard to find (it is still available on Amazon as of today.).
Here are a few I have tried - Genteal Tears Severe Dry Eyes Lubricant, Systane Lub Eye Nightime Ointment Advanced Eye Relief Night Time Lubricant Eye Ointment (Preservative Free). My ophthalmologist prefers that I use the Systane because it is only petrolatum and mineral oil, no preservatives, and it seem to work well for me.
And here are some others I have found on line that seem to be similar.Duratears Naturale, Lubrifresh PM, PuraLube, Refresh PM, Tears Renewed, , Optase HYLO Night Gel for Dry Eyes

I found a moist, warming eye mask by the brand Bruder (other brands didn’t work) on Amazon and it has been life changing. I warm it in microwave and put on eyes twice a day for 10 min. It causes the oil from those glands to release. My eyes are blurry from the oil for a few minutes afterwards but it’s very soothing. I do the eyelid massage while they are blurry. I also use tea tree oil lid wipes twice a day and take HydroEyes. This has truly helped me so much after years of dry eye pain and Xiidra, Cequa, and restastis. Maybe worth a try.

Hello,
I also have cornea erosion due to not being able to close my eye at night. My ophthalmologist advised me to use a PM preservative free ointment to protect the eye at night. During the day I wear a contact which is considered abandoned contact lens. I am still having trouble so now considering getting a scleral contact.

Can you tell more about the device called Tranquileyes? Where did you purchase it and how does it work? Thank you very much and best wishes to you in your healing!

Thank you so much for responding. I have tried every kind and brand of lubricant eye product and they are all extremely irritating to my eyes and some of them even cause pain. Since my eyes are dry due to not completely closing at night i am now trying to use an eye mask. So far, so good.

I am so sorry to hear of your eye issue. I completely understand. Unfortunately, I have a tried all different preservative free eye lubricants and all of them caused a great deal of irritation some caused pain.
My ophthalmologist recommended an eye mask called Tranquileyes Mini from Amazon. The company name is Eye Eco. It is hard to describe how it works, so below is the link for you to review. The mask has foam inserts that you soak in water before putting on at night so they keep your eyes moist and there is a material band that holds it on your face. I have been using it for about 3 weeks and it is working so far. I did have an issue because I was cleaning it with antibacterial soap (which directions said to do) but that irritated my eyes. I contacted their customer service department, who were more than helpful, and now I am using baby shampoo to clean. So far, so good. I truly hope you find something that works for you.

I get this and live in a very dry climate and that makes it even worse. I use a humidifier called pure on my nightstand. I also use heated eye packs on my eyes at night for about 20 minutes and that makes them feel moist. I have used systems preservative free ointment. Just a tiny bit and it works great but it’s messy to get off the next day. Otherwise I allows user refresh celulux preservative free drops and I am about to try the eye drops they make from your blood.
Best wishes to you.
