Eye Irritant - TOBRAMYCIN DEXAMETHASONE Eye drops
Last Sunday (9/21) I got a splash of Pine Sol in my eye while cleaning. After flushing it out for the 15 minutes suggested, I went to the ER. The doctor checked my cornea and said it showed some damage. He prescribed drops and said to follow with ophthalmologist in 2 days. I went on Tuesday (9/23) to my ophthalmologist, he checked as well and said the cornea looked a little “crumpled” but I didn’t get enough in to cause chemical burn. He said with this kind of injury, they want to watch for infection and inflammation, so he changed the drops to TOBRAMYCIN DEXAMETHASONE, which I am to use 4 times a day. I didn’t ask for how long, so I called today. They told me he wants me to use them until my follow up visit on 10/14. That will be 3 weeks of using the drops. However, everything I read stresses not to use this medicine for more than 10 days because it can cause glaucoma, vision loss, etc. I already have glaucoma in my family and my eye pressure is high, which he monitors every 6 months as it is.
Should I continue with these drops as long as he says, or possibly see another ophthalmologist for another opinion? I’m already one week of using the drops. My eye feels better for sure, but there is still a slight feeling of irritation every so often. The kind of feeling you’d get when you’re tired or looking at the computer for a while. Mainly, nothing I would even think twice about if this incident hadn’t happened. However it DID happen and I want to be 1,000% careful with treating it properly.

Did you call the doctor and ask if you could stop the drops?

1 ReactionDid you tell your doctor about your concerns? I find that sometimes it is easier to address my concerns with my doctor via the patient portal using the text link. That way I don’t forget anything and my doctor has time to think before she responds.
