My Experience on Evenity for Treating Osteoporosis

Posted by arlene7 @arlene7, Jul 7, 2020

Thought I would share for those considering or on Evenity for osteoporosis:
Afer much research and discussions with my GP and Cardiologist, I have decided to start my treatment with Evenity injections. As with all drugs, there are many side effects. My biggest concerns were stroke and heart attack. However, considering that I do no have any history for either, for me personally, the benefits outweigh the risks. As my GP said to me, "if everyone only thought about the side effects of the drugs, no one would be taking them".

I had my first injections (subcutaneously in the back of each arm) on June 30th. The nurse that administered the injections discussed the drug in depth, along with all the possibilities that may occur. She also mentioned that for all the patients that she has seen, none has had any side effects.

The injections are once a month for only one year, so I'm hoping that this works well for me and I can improve my bone density, especially in my spine, where I need it the most.

My endocronologist has also prescribed Hydrochlorthiazide for my idiopathic hypocalcemia. I have an appointment with an allergist this month to confirm whether I still have an allergy to sulfa drugs, since this drug contains sulfa. Apart from this I take D3 orally and try to obtain additional calcium through foods not supplements. Trying to walk 3-4 times a week and will begin with a few weight bearing exercises.

My journey began September, 2019 when I was diagnosed with severe osteoporosis. After waiting to see three doctors, receiving three denials from insurance company for Evenity, which took several months, I am hopefully on my way for a favorful outcome.

Thank You for this information,
I am 65 and after my bone density test was told I have osteoporosis. My regular Dr. did not order the test it was my gynecologist, She told me I could do Evenity or Prolia, my choice! I know Evenity works 2 ways to Build new bones and Slow bone loss.. I decided to do that one but also hearing can cause heart attack or stroke and I have been freaking out about that.
I am waiting to get the clear from my Insurance company before I start.
I am happy to have found this group and read what other people have to say about Evenity or the Prolia shot..
Thank You

@beck05 Prolia and Evenity are not your only choices (those two drugs happen to be made by the same company). You can also do Tymlos or Forteo. I just did 18 months of Tymlos and gained 19% in spine and 9% in hips. I started with a low dose, which is possible due to the way the pen is designed. Forteo and Tymlos build bone.

I scheduled my first Evenity injection for May 23 which is right after I finish Tymlos. I, too, am comforted by this site. Not everything I read makes me feel better, but I feel like I am in great company!
As I have said before, my endocrinologist and my rheumatologist are both involved in this Evenity treatment. I was nervous about the increased risk of heart attack and stroke although that seems minimal from what I've read.
My cardiologist gave me a clean bill of heart health. When I went to my migraine doctor (neurologist) this week, I told him about the Evenity and my concerns about stroke. To my relief, he knew a lot about Evenity and offered to send me for a Carotid artery scan and a brain angiogram to look for blockages. He felt like I would be at no additional stroke risk if those were clear. So, I will have those tests next week.
This is the most medical attention at one time that I've ever had. I do not enjoy it, but I feel that I have to follow this plan. I've given up some activities that I was enjoying just a few months ago for fear of falling and breaking a hip. So, I will report back after my first Evenity dose.

I had my first Evenity injection last month, March 2023. So far, I am okay.
After losing my son in 2021 and my husband in 2022, I decided I am not going to let this diagnosis of osteoporosis rule my life.
Grief, not osteoporosis, is ruling my life.

May 2023,
I just started Evenity 6 days ago. Everything seemed to be going fine until 3 days ago when my left foot bone (where I have a slight bunion) became quite painful. Because I am in such a rural area, I am just now getting tests completed to see what might be going on. I have never had gout and eat a gout clean diet so don't think that is the cause. However, joint pain is listed in the side effects. Has anyone had joint pain after receiving the Evenity injections? thanks! JO

My endo told me that the greatest gains from Evenity comes in the first 6 months and increases slower from there. So making it to 11 months is good. I made it to 9 months and stopped because of the increasing joint pain. I won't have a density until January. A friend finished her 12 months and had a greater gain in her hips than her spine but she was pleased with the results. Sorry I don't remember the exact numbers.

This is the first post indicating joint pain. I have had only one injection but am experiencing joint pain in the joint where my big toe joins the foot. I have a very clean diet so do not believe I have gout even though I am being tested for it tomorrow. Where was your joint pain? Thank YOU! J
