My Experience on Evenity for Treating Osteoporosis

Posted by arlene7 @arlene7, Jul 7, 2020

Thought I would share for those considering or on Evenity for osteoporosis:
Afer much research and discussions with my GP and Cardiologist, I have decided to start my treatment with Evenity injections. As with all drugs, there are many side effects. My biggest concerns were stroke and heart attack. However, considering that I do no have any history for either, for me personally, the benefits outweigh the risks. As my GP said to me, "if everyone only thought about the side effects of the drugs, no one would be taking them".

I had my first injections (subcutaneously in the back of each arm) on June 30th. The nurse that administered the injections discussed the drug in depth, along with all the possibilities that may occur. She also mentioned that for all the patients that she has seen, none has had any side effects.

The injections are once a month for only one year, so I'm hoping that this works well for me and I can improve my bone density, especially in my spine, where I need it the most.

My endocronologist has also prescribed Hydrochlorthiazide for my idiopathic hypocalcemia. I have an appointment with an allergist this month to confirm whether I still have an allergy to sulfa drugs, since this drug contains sulfa. Apart from this I take D3 orally and try to obtain additional calcium through foods not supplements. Trying to walk 3-4 times a week and will begin with a few weight bearing exercises.

My journey began September, 2019 when I was diagnosed with severe osteoporosis. After waiting to see three doctors, receiving three denials from insurance company for Evenity, which took several months, I am hopefully on my way for a favorful outcome.

I will be starting Evenity this month. I am planning early to figure which drug to follow up with. Dentists say stay away certain ones that will effect your teeth (loosen, break). I see alot of people take reclast. I like the idea of once a year. The downside is it's in your system for quite awhile. Is their anything that's better to take in case of any dental extraction or breakage?

I am just north of Sarasota & 8 miles from Anna Maria Island. We’re experiencing red tide right now- pretty bad. I highly recommend Sicily & Puglia- much less traveled & very affordable. I thought of what you said about not knowing if your pain is a side effect or just normal aging when I woke up this morning with leg & back pain. I was on the Peloton yesterday for 45 mins so that was probably the reason but I thought if I was on Evenity that’s what I would blame. 😩 Have fun with your friends. Where do you live?

I lived on Anna Maria Island and in Bradenton where my 2 sons were born! Such a coincidence. I still have friends there. Now my husband and I live in Athens, OH. I’d love to visit Sicily and Puglia. It’s nice to connect with women who are dealing with osteoporosis. It’s helpful to know what works for others.

I wish you the very best with Evenity. I had to quit after 3 doses based on side effects experienced. My cardiologist also initially signed off on it, but I did not like some of the side effects I was having. At the time I reported my symptoms to my endocrinologist these side effects had not been listed; they have recently been added. I transitioned over to Reclast, much easier on my body. Evenity is still a fairly new drug, monitor your body closely.

Over the past 25 years I have been on many drugs for osteoporosis and two of them - Fosamax, Prolia- have warnings about teeth and jaw problems. I am still on Prolia but will probably be moving to Evenity because although my spine has improved my hips have declined. I will probably go back on Prolia. I have never had teeth or jaw problems and have even had dental surgery while on Prolia.

Thank you for your reply. Hope you get improvement in your hips.

What about Tymlos or Forteo instead of Evenity? They are anabolic bone builders; Prolia and bisphosphonates are anti-resorptives. If you cannot take Evenity and have not taken an anabolic maybe ask your doc about Tymlos and Forteo.

I finished my 7th round, having hoarseness in the past but this time within 4 days lead to an unrelenting dry cough for now 8 days. I'm tracking to see how long this goes. It started very slowly and escalated to the point I leave meetings and I try not to speak. No fever, no infection nothing else. I'm on cough meds that have minimal effect. Last night (injections were 14 days ago) I experienced jaw pain while eating. That was very concerning. The past injections triggered joint pain, fatigue, a bit of insomnia for a limited time which I can handle. The endless coughing has triggered pain from my spinal fractures. I had to really search to find that coughing is a side effect. Just want you all to be aware not to minimize any weird symptoms like I did.
I likely will not continue with Evenity and will switch to Reclast.

Hi!
May I ask how long you have been on Prolia? Did you have many side effects?

I will be completing 2 years of Forteo and two doctors recommended I transition to Prolia. I am very scared from reading about the major side effects here from many ladies.

But I was told I have not choice but to continue some kind of medicine to preserve the gains I had from Forteo.

Thank you in advance! Good luck!
