ET JAK2 Hydroxyurea Red Blood Cell count increase
Hello,
I am wondering if anyone has experienced this- I have ET JAK2 and have been taking Hydroxyurea for 2 months 1000mg per day to lower platelets. My last bloodwork was good for platelets down to 223 from high point of 823. But now my RDC/RBC count has increased to 21.8, was normal level before of 13.7.
Wondering what this means, is it normal? My oncologist is out of office until 6/19 and looking for any information about this. Another oncologist responded to my bloodwork saying to reduce the dosage to 500 per day to keep platelets at this level but didn't answer my RBC question.
Thank you!!!
Sarah G

You've really brought down your platelet count, Sarah G! Good for you! Lowering your HU dose is great too!
Your oncologist is the best person to speak to those change in your blood work.
Since he (or she) is away right now, I'll comment that such variations may be a side effect of either ET itself.
With ET, our bone marrow creates oversized, misshapen platelets. That alone could result in increased RDC/RBC values.
Of course anytime a number is off, we worry about it! But please consider that the values of a single blood draw are like a bad photo someone snaps of you! A single moment has been captured, nothing like a good portrait.
Numbers going up and down are part of the ET rodeo.
