estradiol cream to prevent urinary tract infections

Posted by luhealth @luhealth, Apr 19 11:03am

I am in my 70s and have lupus. My gynecologist prescribed estradiol vaginal cream as a way to prevent urinary tract infections. It's estrogen based and I'm worried it may contribute to flares. When I discussed it with the dr. she said it should be harmless, but I don't know how much experience she's had with lupus patients. Would like to know if other women have had experiece using this.

I use estradiol cream 3X a week. I have frequent UTIs. I thought that I had read here that someone was instructed to use it every night. My urologist is very casual about it and doesn't think that it helps prevent UTIs. How often are you using the cream? Does it really help/prevent UTIs? I have been searching to see if a study or other information is available and have not not been successful. I have mucous membrane pemphigoid. My UTIs started prior to my diagnosis. I started with UTIs when trying to come off of a medication and had uncontrollable bowels. Thank you.

@audreyh I was told to use it 2X a week and have been doing so for 2 months. My gynecologist is emphatic in prescribing it to prevent UTIs in post-menopause. In my case it might be too soon to tell.

I was told every day for the first two weeks and then 2x a week, works for me.

Hi. I took Estradiol 1 gram daily for two weeks and then just twice a week. I had that same concern about the estrogen because I was dealing with breast cancer at the time and was taking estrogen suppressant. My oncologist approved for me taking the Estradiol and informed me that there’s only a slight absorption of the estrogen which makes it safe to take.

Great topic and shares. I had to get pelvic floor physical therapy because I was having trouble peeing-crazy but I learned a lot. They told me to put a little dab of estrogen cream in 2-3 times a week. I had a hysterectomy many years ago and this really helped the fragile tissue (I'm 75). And, maybe I'm just imagining this but it seems to help other things too.

@dream1649 I don't remember that specifically, but it's a good idea, thank you.
