Erosive Osteoarthritis
I have been trying to get answers for many years to find out why my OA in my hands is so painful and debilitating. It doesn't look as bad to the eye as many other people I have met that also have OA but have huge joint nodes but say it's not too painful. I had the traditional basal thumb surgery on left and right hands, left went well 10yrs ago but right which I had one yr later has never been pain free.. About 6 mths ago the pain in the back of my right wrist became so much worse at the same time a large lump appeared.I thought this was probably a Ganglion then a few weeks later a softer round lump appeared on the dip joint on the inside of my right little finger which as made the joint very swollen. Eventually got Xrays of both hands which have now been diagnosed as Erosive Osteoarthritis which I have never heard of. Prognosis doesn't look good with this type of OA. Has anyone else been diagnosed with this and do I ask to be referred to a Rheumatologist ? How do I deal with this ? Is there any meds I can take for pain and to slow down the progression ? Thank you

I was diagnosed by xrays. It was later confirmed that i did not have rhumitoid arthritis. deinitely erosive. i was only diagnosed in August. So I’m really just getting started on this. I see a lot of people have been in it for quite a while and they’re in a lot of pain. Right now I’m not in too much pain and I am working with my acupuncturist as individual fingers start to really hurt so we’ll see if that lasts the help that he can give me. I’ve just been kind of wondering, what the hell was going on because I can’t find I couldn’t find anybody that knew anything so I appreciate all your people helping me and telling me and it looks like there might not be any light at the end of the tunnel for this stuff but at least if you know what you’re fighting you can get ready for it. Thanks again everybody.
see. I have been told that it can only be in your fingers on your toes so they really don’t know very much about this. You’re right so good luck I can’t imagine not having it someplace like that.
thanks for moving me over to the other group. I’ve gotten quite a bit of information by reading their posts. I definitely have a arthritis in my hands. It was found by x-ray isn’t confirmed by blood test that I don’t have women toward arthritis my PA here in Cortez I’ve never even heard of it. I went to rheumatologist over Duran Duran, Duran Duran, Durango, Colorado, and he never heard of. I mean, I think he heard about it, but he didn’t know anything and he didn’t bother to do any research before I saw him for the second time with the results of my blood test, so that’s why I felt so out there with no help so this has really helped. Can’t say it’s very uplifting, but at least gives me away to know what I’m up against thanks again
My rheumatologist diagnosed me with Erosive Osteo-arthritis recently. My right hand is more critical. Progressive worsening over 2 year from 2 fingers to 4, also basal thumb area. I did the blood test and it is not RA. He mentioned no cure for EOA currently. The only treatment is to put me on Hydroxychloroquine(Plaquenil) for now. We went through common the side effects and I am nervous about it. Anyone in the group is taking this medication? Appreciate your thoughts. Thank you.
I was just diagnosed in August. i’m having trouble finding any medical person that really does anything or seems to care. I have finally found a physical therapist that has suggested PT on it with a hand specialist. I am working with the acupuncturist. He does seem to help. he has said there’s a kind of a painful way we can work on it a little bit more. I’m considering that I would like to keep in contact with you to see about your medication and let you know about my acupuncture and PT. how bad has it affected your two fingers it seems to have affected all my digits not bad but to some degree and two on my right hand are getting stiff and crooked. Thanks for answering.
My pointer, middle and ting fingers are bad. Very stiff on middle and ring fingers and swollen on and off on my middle finger. I hope acupuncture will help your condition. Does the acupuncture hurt a lot?
I have erosive osteoarthritis in my fingers, along with rheumatoid arthritis in other joints. I stopped Humira and methotrexate, and my erosive osteoarthritis has gotten worse. I feel like methotrexate has some effect on it. I stopped the meds so I will have better immunity for a cruise I have planned. The med combo only gave me maybe a 20% improvement in the rheumatoid joints, but inflammation is way up in the DIP finger joints.
I have erosive arthritis in my hands. I've had it for decades. I saw a hand specialist surgeon and various other arthritis doctors of all stripes (OA to RA and in between) over 3 decades. Doc said he could take my painful swelled hand/wrist off, but he couldn't put it back on! (his form of joke!) I have arthritis EVERYWHERE in my hand. I'm going to skip to the end of the story - MY PAIN came from gout! From high uric acid level in a simple blood test (after 30 years). I've done ALL the arthritis tests... except, evidently, THAT ONE. Because the docs look at xrays LOADED with almost 30 years of arthritis. Last fall, someone here said try "tart cherry capsules." I did. It solved the problem. No more swelling, no more pain, no more waking at night with my hands locked shut. So simple. So easy. So late. But hey...try it. And message me if it works for you too. Only $20 to blow. I asked to go on the medication after 3 months. It worked even better for me. (Allopurinol.) I've come to the conclusion that OA doesn't in and of itself cause pain. So I keep on searching when I get pain. Pain isn't natural and it isn't healthy.

Cherry extract! Wow thanks Lorie. I have arthritis in my hands (well, everywhere.....) although it seems to have settled down since I retired. Probably because I don't use a keyboard often anymore. Not sure.
It's unreal that for 30 years no one thought to check your uric acid levels. I'm surprised that wouldn't show up on routine blood work taken for a physical.
Well I'm glad you found a solution. I'll give this a try. Arthritis has just had its way with me - both big toes fused, both knees replaced, right hip replaced last month, left shoulder scheduled to be replaced in June.
The surgery has relieved the pain though, so it's all been worth it. I don't know of any surgery that will help with arthritis in the hands, and don't think I'd go for that anyway.
Thanks Lorie, and all the best.
Joe
Hey Joe! Wow, you’re a champ! I will be returning for another lumbar surgery at some point adjacent to the areas where I had my fusion L3, L4, L5. I’m just a mess right now. But I started an exercise routine because I couldn’t think of anything else to do because I’m not quite ready another surgery. With my dogs, torn knee ligaments it slowed my walking down so now I’m on a stationary bicycle in the morning for about 30 minutes to an hour before I mosey him around the block.
Regarding the OA, I had bad inflammatory reactions, especially provoked by exerting myself (which means it’s hard to exercise because it stimulates an inflammatory reaction). I went to a hand surgeon. The best there is after research and there was nothing he could do with all the arthritis my hand and wrist are loaded with. But now I have no pain in my hands when I could control the uric acid levels that come with hyperuricemia. the chart cherry capsules – the ZAZZEE work great the ones in the health food store don’t have the same amount of stuff in it. After being on the allopurinol for a few months, my uric acid levels were normal exactly at normal. When I first had gout 23 years ago, I don’t know if anybody tested my uric acid levels. The only thing they would tell me was that if I continue to have the gout flares, they would have to biopsy my joints. But I learned to control the gout, flares with a joint juice I would make of KNUSDEN brand, black cherry juice a little apple cider vinegar and some lemon juice, and then a bunch of water or white soda, and a proportion of like five to one five parts water to one part of the concoction. I down that and then after a couple hours the gout would be gone, so I never went back to the doctor for it. Over the years I would have more of an inflammatory reaction after I would exert myself and they would just say it was the OA nobody ever tested for gout. I asked my doctor how crazy that was. She really had nothing to say. I’m lucky she gives me whatever test I asked for cause it makes sense and she’s happy. I do the math. I still keep the ZAZZEE. Tar cherry capsules around because I will still flare on the allopurinol when the weather is really bad or I’ve eaten some sugar or farmed fish as I am on the lowest dose of allopurinol.
So how are you liking your new hip? I loved mine after about three months. At five months I could do my first chalk art in the street the first night or two in the hospital are always killers for me but then it’s amazing to see how much pain is gone.. I think you are like me and you are no longer afraid of the surgeries because you see how great it makes your life afterward. I did kind of wonder what happened to you there for a few weeks, but I was pretty distracted myself. I wish you a successful and complete recovery, your buddy Lori!
