EPI and Alcohol

Posted by jlmp @jlmp, May 12, 2024

I was diagnosed with EPI 6 months ago and am managing well with VITAL enzymes from Amazon. So thankful I don’t have to buy the $3000 dollar medicine. However I do miss an occasional margarita. I never drank anything except margaritas, mostly in summertime with Mexican food. Does anyone know why we can’t have alcohol and does anyone with EPI have an occasional drink?

Anyone have so much gas and bloating at night that it keeps you from getting much sleep. I have been diagnosed with EPI.

Yes, happened a lot before finding out I had EPI. It's frustrating. I'm new to this by a week. But went out to dinner the other night and took my 2 Creon but got so bloated and gassy after. The trapped gas practically fills my entire body. I'm finding out, I should have taken more Creon throughout the meal. The problem is, my doctor only gave me enough for 3 meals a day.

Thanks for your comment. Been dealing with this several months now. The Creon has not helped me at all that I can tell. Diarrhea during the day after meals and gas and bloating at night. I hope your symptoms will improve. I think I must have a rare case of EPI.

Maybe you have IBS or IBD. There's a test you can do to see if your intestines are inflamed without having a colonoscopy - Calprotectin, Stool. I have the opposite problem. I have to take 5 different things daily to not be constipated. Good luck with all of it!

I had this a few times. The last time I thought it was a kale salad but not sure. I am going to try the peppermint oil that was recommended by someone

After reading various comments bought peppermint oil tablets, beano, and 80 mg simethicone. Bloating much improved. Thanks.

I believe those of us with EPI can't process alcohol very well. I had a few incidents where I ended up in the ER after two drinks and was 3 times the legal limit! This always accompanied a pancreatic attack as well. It is just very difficult to digest and can trigger pancreatitis. It sucks. I miss a cocktail every once in a while but...that pain is no joke and I'll do anything to avoid it. I hope this helps. < 3 Be well.

That's great I wish that was my case, I get really sick.

@palermo1 - do you know what it is about your EPI that causes drinking alcohol to make you really sick?

I also miss an occasional alcoholic drink, but my doctor told me that there were two thinks I could not do, and that was to eat ice cream or drink alcohol. He said that taking creon or something similar would allow me to eat almost anything else. Ive since researched this, and it appears that alcohol and smoking can damage the pancreas. I was diagnosed 9 months ago and am managing my diet. It is possible to get creon at a reduced price if you go to the creon site and apply for a reduction. I pay $50 a month, and my insurance pays the rest. I'm finding that EPI is rather rare, so it isn't easy getting information. I've seen two nutritionist, who had never met anyone with EPI.

It has been my experience that very few specialists in diets concerning the pancreas have little or no knowledge of EPI. I wonder if this disease is simply undiagnosed. It was in my case. So far, I am relying on "Dr. Google" to advise me with regard to meals and snacks. I will try again to obtain more information from a nearby hospital's center for nutrition. Wish me luck. If I find out anything that could help us, I will share!!!

My PCP advised me only to take two Creon pills half way through a meal and one capsule after the first bite of a snack. And to take Imodium after a bout of diarrhea should that occur. Its very unsettling to not know what will happen after a meal or snack. Definitely an anti-social disease! I also tried a non alcoholic wine. Still had a reaction.
