@cindysummit That's a very good question!

It depends on what type of renal cancer a patient may have. Here is a rather in depth article from the National Library of Medicine, that explains it to you.

Have you been diagnosed with renal cancer?

Yes. I am 65 and was diagnosed with Chromopbobe Renal Cell Carcinoma with Eosinophilic Features. I had cryoablation on 11/11/22 and am now under Active Surveillance."

I am trying to understand all of this in patient language. Thank you so much. If you have any other info, I would appreciate it.

This is hard and sometimes scary.

@cindysummitt Here, I found an article this morning from verywellhealth.com, written by a medical writer and reviewed by an oncologist. It would be a good idea to get information from your medical team, on what stage they consider you to be in. As you will read, it can be a highly curable condition.

Yes, it's hard to have any diagnosis that changes up your life. Were you experiencing strange symptoms that led to testing? Like many of us, finding out we have a kidney issue comes as a surprise. Our body adapts to everyday life with mounting kidney issues, and it can be so subtle we don't take notice until we look back. Remember, we are a big virtual support group here! As you wander through discussion in the "Cancer" and "Cancer-managing symptoms" and even "Just want to talk" support groups, you will find other members who struggle with new health conditions. Check with your medical center to talk to a social worker there. Who is your support team close to you, family and friends? Hoping they are open to you sharing your concerns. And I'm here!

Thank you so much. Such kindness and warmth in your thoughtful response.

The tumor was small and found incidentally..as most kidney tumors are. I was told it was Stage 1.

I worry that it will come back somewhere else because of the eosininophillic features. That changes things a bit, I think.

I won't see my doctors for a bit until my next scan...which is in a few months. But yes, I do have a good support system.

Going to read the article now. Thanks again!

Very good article. Struck, though by the author's comment below regarding options in treatment:

"Cryosurgery: The cancerous tissue is frozen.
Radiofrequency ablation: An electrical current is applied to the cancerous tissues.
Microwave ablation: Microwave energy is applied through a probe to the cancerous tissues.

One of these alternatives might be a good option for you are at high risk for surgery, if you have a very small tumor, or if you only have one kidney. However, it is much more likely that your cancer will grow back if you pick one of these methods instead of standard surgery."

My doctor told me almost the opposite about reoccurrence after cryoablation.

And so the worry continues.

In addition, I became an avid walker in 2020 when we had the COVID lockdown. I love being outside and increased my walking distance to 5-7 miles with each walk. Now I can't do that much so I worry this thing that is not supposed to spread...well, is spreading. Yesterday I struggled making it to 3 miles...felt dizzy for the first time and stopped.

I cannot wait to have the new set of scans and bloodwork. I wish it were tomorrow.

Ugh.

Hi All,

Can someone explain breakthrough pain? Does it indicate that the cancet may have spread?

Also, what strategies do you use, if any, for relaxing in an MRI machine? My anxiety level is rising, as I move closer to the date of my MRI w/contrast. Usually a tear forms in my right eye during the test. I get scared right before this.

Thanks.

Cindy
