Experience with Dorsal Arachnoid Web (DAW) in T-Spine?

Posted by klingebretsen @klingebretsen, Mar 11 6:58am

I just received MRI results of my thoracic spine, which was conducted in order to place a spinal cord stimulator for chronic pain in my lumbar spine: L5/S1 nerve damage and hyper mobility in my L3 and L4. However, the MRI shows that I have a Dorsal Arachnoid Web (DAW), a rare, acquired, or sometimes congenital condition where a band of thickened tissue in the arachnoid membrane causes dorsal compression of the spinal cord in my t-spine.

Does anyone in this community have any experience with this condition? Much appreciated.

Good morning!

Does anyone in this community have any experience with a dorsal arachnoid web or anterior cord herniation, or any condition that is affecting their spinal cord in their thoracic spine?

I have those issues too. The issue with my T-spine was discovered with an MRI, performed so my pain management doc could determine where he was going to place a spinal cord stimulator for chronic L5/S1 nerve pain. Please cut and paste my MRI findings into a Google search for an explanation. I’ve been waiting over a month to hear back (pun intended) from the spine surgeon to see what to do about my T-spine issue, prolonging placement of the SCS. So frustrating.

klingebretsen, my comment is second hand from years ago. Surgery was managed successfully by Paul McCormick. Pain from this thoracic compression can cause chronic lumbar pain. While the surgery has a very high success rate, you'd want the skills of a surgeon who specializes in arachnoid web. It's a complex surgery.
I hope you hear back soon.

I am in Australia and have recently been diagnosed with a DAW at T4-T5.
I'm 22 so still figuring out what symptoms this is and isn't actively causing as I have had health issues for a while and have been using a wheelchair for about 5 years now. It has taken doctors a while to order scans because years ago they said that nothing would show up and refused to look into the potential of there being any spinal cord involvement for my symptoms.
I wish I had some more information because I have had to do a lot of researching about this because so many of my clinicians have no idea what it is and google it in front of me

arkayde27,
An Australian neurosurgeon performing procedures for thoracic arachnoid webs is Dr. Ralph Mobbs, a prominent spine surgeon based in Sydney at the NeuroSpine Clinic in Randwick. He and his team frequently treat these conditions using minimally invasive microsurgical techniques to decompress the spinal cord.

Finally getting a diagnosis is pretty exciting because of the potential for improving your condition. You really need a highly skilled neurosurgeon with the best equipment.
DAW is often missed on MRI. And you have a fairly rare condition. There aren't many neurosurgeons worldwide experienced with this procedure. Mobbs looks good.
I hope you have really good luck.
