Does someone with NAION get any eyesight back?

Posted by smokeyc @smokeyc, Jun 9, 2023

I recently have been diagnosed with NAION and have lost most of my peripheral vision. It has been a struggle for me and very worried that it will happen in the other eye. I was curious if anyone has experienced vision improvement after vision loss?

My left eye went dark over 2 months ago in the morning. It stayed black with thin shards of light for a few weeks and gradually light and faint colors came back in. Also a grey shadow on the top and bottom which also has gradually disappeared. But the vision I have in it now is pretty bad. Faint images fade in and out . I could never drive if both eyes were like this.Have had so many different diagnoses. From what you have to central vein occlusion, optic neuropathy ect. Finally got a referral to a
Neuro Opthamologist, which I can’t get in to see because she is booked until Sept. So scared this is going to happen again. All the retina specialists and other eye Drs said my original blackout would be permanent. Well it wasn’t. I believe my eye is still repairing itself. I hope you also will regain some sight. I believe it is possible. From what I have read , up to 6 months. Also heard taking Taurine helps with repair. Wish you all the luck. This has been very depressing.

The worst part of my peripheral vision is my lower eyesight. When it first happened my central vision was still had 20/20. Over the last week it has gotten worse. I have an eye appointment 6/19 to check my vision again. I’m extremely nervous that it will happen in my left eye. And yes I’m with you this is very depressing!

Let us know what your eye Dr says and I will when I get in to see mine. My eye seems to fluctuate daily. Some days it aches and vision has gotten worse, other days it stays the same. When I wake up it is bad but gets better ( if you can call it that!) as the day goes on. Wish you luck on your visit to the Dr.

I will keep you posted as things go on. Does your eye feel different than normal…other than your actual vision loss? Mine feels kinda of puffy/ heavy/ tired. I wanted to tell you that I was taking Dr. prescribed testosterone and the eye Dr. said that was likely the reason this happened to me. It had my red blood cells/ hemoglobin elevated and thickened my blood. Sure would’ve been nice for that Dr. to warn me that taking testosterone raises your red blood cell count. Plus, he raised my dosage! Anyways, thank you so much for reaching out and I hope things get better for you!

My eye felt swollen and tired also after I lost my vision for about a month. Now it is kinda getting back to normal as far as that feeling. But if I am tired or read too much it acts up again. There are so many things that cause this vision loss, even Drs are at a loss to pinpoint it. But to put someone on meds that could cause this is appalling. Although the injections I have to take monthly are known to cause vision loss( ironic) even though they are suppose to help with my degenerative decease disease. It is rare but it does happen. My primary care Doctors father suffered a stroke in his eye from repeated injections of Eylea and I am starting to wonder if that is what caused mine.
Wish you luck and hopefully that awful feeling in your eye has gone away
