Does Milk Thistle/Silymatin/Legalon helps after liver transplant?

Posted by webiondev @webiondev, Oct 13, 2019

Hello everyone. I could not find info on milk thistle.

I wanted to know how much this benefits after liver transplant specially if you have some kind of biliary condition or abnormal liver enzymes?

Also does this help against immunosuppression drug toxicity?

Thanks in advance

@webiondev …thank you for asking this question. I am also wondering about milk whistle and I am post transplant. I took it for a month or so then stopped. I neglected to tell my Hep doctors…my bad. Anyway, I've been wondering if it was beneficial.

@webiondev and @gaylea1 I will not taking ANYTHING without checking with my transplant department. There are many herbals and “natural” remedies that they will not approve, often because the manufacture of them is not well-regulated. There are some things too that work against immunosuppressive drugs, or in the case of echinacea, add to your immunity. Your immunity is carefully balanced and tracked with the frequent lab work.

@contentandwell I know I should have asked 😐 I will talk to the docs when I next see them. I'm having to go onto the plastic surgeon on Oct 28th for a cancerous skin lesion that developed about 6 months post transplant. I was never in the sun all summer but I guess my immune system was just too low to battle it.

@gaylea1 Our immune systems won’t battle much. I had toenail fungus last year, and I am scrupulously careful at my health club. My bare feet never touch the floor, and I cringe when I see others walking around barefoot. It takes forever to get rid of toenail fungus, and we can’t use the most effective treatment, an oral one because it can affect your kidneys. They let me try it and sure enough, my numbers were not good.

@gaylea, @webiondev, I have not found any research information to justify taking milk thistle after a transplant. I am curious, though. Why are you interested to take it? What results do you expect to achieve?

Hi @rosemarya I was thinking if milk thistle protects liver from drug toxicity taking it won't help against possible toxicities of tacrolimus and prednisolone? Also as I have a biliary condition won't it help preserve the biliary function?

Thanks
