Does anyone think it's ok to swim in outdoor pool with MAC?

Posted by northland @northland, Apr 28, 2023

We're hoping to go on a trip with the grandkids. The place has an outdoor pool, should I even been near it because of the vapers? I'd love to play with them in the pool.

Good morning group…Sue perhaps you will thread my question where it needs to go….

I am getting ready to head off to NJH to have my yearly follow up with Dr Daley & team..and want to hear from my trusted MAC associates on the following…

Does anyone else suffer from intermittent hearing loss and voice weakness?
In the beginning…2018-2020(before I was diagnosed after culture positive)…no doctor connected the dots…they sent me to ENTs and assured me it was early onset hearing loss….NOT…because once I improved (from MAC after antibiotics for a period) hearing loss and voice returned to normal “me”.
I am off and have been off antibiotics since 2021…BUT…here in the crux of my question…there are periods when I feel like I am fighting off the beginnings of a cold or perhaps “sickness”…when my hearing goes and my voice weakens…
(I consequently up my zinc, vit C, rest, isolation, masks, etc)…right now my hearing is suffering a bit…”does anyone else have this issue and have any feedback from any specialist that may have interacted with them?”

Will bring this up with Dr. Daley…but as we all know…doctors bank on empirical evidence….laboratory/diagnostic confirmations, proof, etc…half the time they don’t believe our symptoms are related to our disease.

Appreciate your comments.

There are so many different opinions about this. I have been lap swimming in an outdoor pool for over 20 years, even after I was diagnosed with MAC in 2013. Dr Huitt at NJH, while she didn’t fully endorse it, mainly because of GERD and the position of my body when I’m swimming, as she also did not endorse Yoga for the same reasons; she said, if I’m goin to swim, it’s best to do it in am before eating a meal. Beyond GERD, it has become the subject of discussion due to fact that MAC lives in the layer of film/vapor that sits above the pool water level; however, in an outdoor pool, I’ve been told that it’s much safer than an indoor pool, as the vapor is generally moving off the water surface easily with the moving air outdoors. My new doctor at NJH, Dr. Kasperbauer, said that she wouldn’t recommend swimming; however, my Stanford doctor thinks that swimming outdoors a couple of days would be okay. In the end, it’s my decision ( with all the research I’ve done). I’ve always been encouraged to live my life in a way that makes me alive and happy by all the doctors. So, I will continue. What does your NJH doctor think? Hope that’s helpful.
